I had an extended bikini job done. The last session was about two months ago. It wasn't cheap - about $1400 altogether, but I thought I could just bite the bullet (financially and physically) and get it done it'd be worth it. The truth is, I don't think laser hair removal works anywhere near as well as they say it does. The girls kept acting like my case was an anomaly but I don't think this is true. I've since talked to 2 friends and they say the same thing - there's A LOT of regrowth. I would say about 25% of the hair has come back. This, in my opinion, is not worth it. Years back I had started with electrolysis (this was before laser came along) and although it was time-consuming and pretty much equally painful, I think the regrowth with this method is considerably less. So I have to go back to it, rather than paying the discount 'touch-up' fee of $120 per session with no guarantee that the hair will in fact totally disappear. It's going to be interesting to compare results as far as laser vs. electrolysis goes. Anyway, if people try to give you the impression laser works, I wouldn't believe them. I can't speak for what South Granville uses as a laser, but if it isn't a diode laser with wavelength in the range of 800nm (like the Lightsheer Diode or the Syneron Comet), you are going to require many more treatments and a less than effective result. Laser Hair removal works on the premise that it targets the chromophore, melanin, in the hair follicle to heat up the surrounding hair structure and blood supply feeding the hair follicle to disable it. If you look at the an aborption graph for melanin, it works very well in the 800 range, but dips now substantially with higher wavelengths (such in 1064 in a YAG laser).The other factor that will work in your favour is if you have a good contrast between your skin colour and hair color (i.e. light skin and dark hair). The darker the skin (including tanned skin), the more melanin your skin has in it, which competes with the hair follicle for the light energy. If you skin collects a lot of heat, it is possible that you can get a superficial skin burn. Conversely, if you turn down the energy during the treatment to protect the skin, it will take many more treatments to disable all of the hair follicles. The YAG laser usually takes many more treatments because it is using a wavelength that doesn't get absorbed as well.The only way to get good results is to go to a service provider, like Dermal Laser Centre, who has been in the business for a long time and understands all of the nuances of the lasers and the effects on the skin and hair. We certainly don't recommend LHR to our clients if the likelihood of success is low, so that is probably why we have such a high efficacy rate. It doesn't help either of us out in the long term. You also have to make sure that they have the best equipment for LHR - which is a diode laser in the range of 800nm. If they don't, they are just fooling you because most other lasers are in the wrong light spectrum to work and are devised to treat too broad of a skin spectrum or to reduce the amount of pain that there is. The saying that there is no pain, there is go gain holds true (however, you can manage the pain with a topical such as EMLA or using a surface cooling machine like the Synercool). However, in defense of Arbutus, it is not always possible to determine the outcome of a treatment which can vary depending upon age, ethnicity, hormonal issues, and other factors. All of them can have some efficacy, although YAG for hair removal is marginal because it has been optimized for safety on darker skin types (where light passes through the melanin in the skin, because melanin doesn't absorb the light that well at this wavelength). Ironically, it is the melanin in the hair follicle that is needed to absorb the energy to disable the hair follicle. Since it isn't as well absorbed, you get lesser results requiring more treatments, and ultimately higher cost. Also, the YAG is supposed to hurt less too. We have found that our clients are less comfortable with the YAG. 800 nm diode lasers (Lightsheer or Syneron Comet) have the best trade-offs between absorption and effectiveness, and pain tolerance.These are excellent machines that have been work horses for years. There is a good reason why these machines have outlived many of the so called new technologies like the Sciton and others. Laser will kill some hairs and some remain dormant and will grow back very slowly. I waited for more than a year before going back. I would shave and wax during that time. The laser clinics will try and make you come every 4 - 8 wks but you are simply wasting your money as the laser cannot target all those dormant hairs. Remember the clinics are simply trying to make money and recover their costs of the machine - which is around 100K. It is true that the laser can only target active hair growth (in the anagen stage) which has active melanin pigmentation. Usually only about 20-30% of hair follicles are active at any time, and therefore you are targeting the dimishing hair after time. The reason the laser clinics tell you to come back in 4-8 weeks, is that is the normal hair growth cycle. Waiting any time longer than that isn't really buying you anything. Because all the hair that may have been missed plus the hair that was previously dormant, will become a target for the laser again. I have a friend who is a dermatologist in the States and has a clinic like yours, he explanined the growth cycle of the hair - I chose to wait for a year as I had a significant reduction after my first treatment the re-growth was much lighter and it didn't bother me too much. That is great. We wouldn't do a treatment if there is no hair left over after one treatment, 2, 3 or whatever it takes. Generally, you should expect 20-30% hair reduction after the first treatment, hopefully more, but generally not. If for some reason all of your hair is active, you can get a better response. Physiologically, there isn't reason that you would have any more or less hair 8 weeks or one year later. So if you are eager to get a greatly dimished result, you would want to come every 4-8 weeks. If you care to wait longer, all that you are doing is delaying your finished result. I hope that it explains it to some degree. We have been doing laser hair removal since 1997 and have tried many many lasers including SoftLight, Lightsheer, Aurora, Coherent IPL, Sciton, and a YAG (which I can't remember the name of). The lightsheer 810 nm diode gets the best results because it has the best light absorption spectrum. The syneron comet should do well as well because it has the right wavelength as well (in addition to the electrical energy) but we haven't tried it yet.
