Laser vs Electrolysis by Sara Thomas Introduction Needle Electrolysis LASER The disadvantages of LASER Conclusion Introduction Sara Thomas MBAE, BTEC, HND, C&G BABTAC, is a fully qualified beauty therapist, electrologist and red vein specialist with 16 years experience, including ten years specialising in electrolysis for clients with gender dysphoria. I have been working in the field of electrolysis for the past 16 years, specialising for the past nine in removing hair permanently for members of the transgendered population who want to remove facial growth and any unwanted hair on the body. Over the past few years, new technology such as the lasers and intensed pulsed light systems have come in to the forefront of hair removal. What is the best option for you? What clinical evidence do you really have at your fingertips to prove that these systems really are as effective as prophesied? Is electrolysis the answer or is it not? The reports are all so conflicting, I hope this information may be of some use. Needle Electrolysis Short wave diathermy was established in the late 1800s and permanently removes hair. It has had over 100 years to achieve its stamp of approval. The process involves inserting a fine needle into the follicle. The current is then passed down the follicle to the papilla (the focal point for nourishing the hair). Once the papilla has been completely coagulated, it can no longer supply the hair root with life sustaining nutrients. The hair in the anagen stage is destroyed permanently for the rest of your life. There is however a one in three chance of catching the hair in its anagen phase. The negative side to this treatment is that it is time consuming and can take from 18 months to three years (depending upon the density of beard growth) to remove all the hair permanently. This is an invasive method which does produce discomfort and some skin reaction, redness known as erythema. The positive side to this treatment is that it is permanent. Hormones are not compulsory to make the treatment successful. Electrolysis works on any type of hair structure, fine or strong and destroys it once in the anagen stage. Hormones will not control the point of the cycle which the hair is in. It also works on all skin types, based on the Fitzpatrick scale 1-6, from very pale skin to Afro-Caribbean skin. Hair pigments can range through red, brown, black and white. I would strongly recommend all genital work to be carried out by electrolysis for any pre-operative transsexual person, as you need the guarantee of permanency prior to surgery not the uncertainty of hair returning internally within five years. LASER Intensed pulsed light systems and lasers, the technology of the future in hair removal, do maintain some advantages. The major advantage is that large areas can be treated in a short period of time. The discomfort of the treatment varies from one individual to another, but is generally less painful than electrolysis. These systems also work on the principle of destroying the anagen hair. With the pulsed light, the source of light is a flash lamp giving out a broad spectrum of light. Filters only allow through the wavelengths required. This technology is generally more robust than lasers and at present does not require health authority registration. The technical term for this action is selective photothermolysis which literally means selectively heating certain materials using light. In this case melanin in the hair acts as an absorber. When light is applied to the area the temperature rise will be sufficient to cause surrounding cells to die, therefore stopping follicles in the anagen phase from producing further hairs. This works on skin types 1-5 but great care is needed with types 4-5. The disadvantages of LASER St Johns Wort, a mild herbal treatment, can cause the skin to have an adverse reaction. If you are a migraine sufferer or have epilepsy the flashing light could possibly trigger off one an attack. Medical history has to be taken such as any heart condition, medication taken, wound healing, liability to infection, diabetes and of course epilepsy. A check list of questions should be asked on hair and skin and with laser treatment the operate should be a doctor or a highly qualified operator such as a nurse. The word laser is an acronym: Light Amplification by Stimulation of Emission of Radiation. A medium such as a ruby crystal is excited by electrical energy, which then emits a specific wavelength of light to destroy the hairs. The crucial difference is that laser systems employ a single pulse of a very pure colour of light whereas other light systems such as SkinSoft use a multi-pulse of a less pure colour. The aim is to use light absorption by melanin pigment in the base of the hair shaft to produce local heating to destroy the follicle. Problems occur due to melanin in the skin being heated by absorbing light as well. In the case of the single pulse lasers, the hair and the epidermis can be heated significantly, causing tissue damage. Laser and pulsed light deliver high intensity light so there is always potential for other tissue to be damaged causing scarring. However a proficient operator should be able to pinpoint tissue destruction to within the hair follicle precisely and without damaging surrounding tissue. Laser and light work most effectively on a patient with dark hair and fair skin, because the hair and not the skin will absorb the light. Light hairs are not treated so successfully. Long term effects of laser to the skin are in question. Due to conflicting results and a degree of uncertainty about the possible effects to the skin, some local health authorities such as the Chelsea and Westminster will not consider laser for hair removal. At present, laser and pulsed light systems should not advertise themselves as 'permanent', but should say 'long term or permanent' hair reduction. Research papers show the best findings to date are of two years without regrowth, others show 75-80% reduction in hair regrowth. Conclusion As a practising electrologist I have decided to offer the pulsed light system to work alongside electrolysis. If you can afford treatment with the new technology but are not completely satisfied with the end result, then electrolysis can most certainly finalise what you set out to achieve. The future will certainly bring refined laser technology, superior cooling devices, effective topical treatments and permanence. However, I believe electrolysis will always play a part in the field of permanent hair removal. Laser hair removal for man is becoming more and more accepted each day, and professional athletes are now touting it. There are many common choices for back hair removal , such as shaving waxing, depilatory creams, electrolysis, and laser hair removal . While shaving, waxing and depilatory creams are inexpensive in the short run, they have their disadvantages. Mainly, it can be difficult to remove back hair by yourself and difficult to get someone to shave, or apply depilatory cream to your back every few days. Waxing can be painful to your back and your wallet. Laser hair removal can result in permanent body hair removal for unwanted back hair . Each pulse of laser light removes most of the hairs which are in the anagen (growth) stage within the area of a coin in less than one second. Entire back hair removal treatment takes about one hour. Treatments need to be repeated every six weeks or so for an average of 5-8 treatments. Each treatment costs about $750. Prices vary widely because of the differences in the amount of hair that men have. The "average" man may have to pay around $5,625 to complete a series of laser back treatments. Overall, he probably will achieve permanent back hair removal , and save lots of time and money over the long run. Patient before and after using Candela GentleLase Plus. After pictures are four months post third treatment. Patient before and after photos after 1 treatment of back hair removal Shaving is inexpensive, and quick, but can result in nicks, and ingrown hairs. When you remove body hair with depilatory cream it may only take 15 minutes from start to finish, but will cost you about $5 dollars per week, which adds up to about $260 per year. Over the years this will cost a lot and only provide results which last for only a few days at a time. The results of waxing back hair can last for an average of six weeks. Waxing can be quite painful. It can also result in ingrown hairs. Another downside to waxing is that it can cost on average between $25 and $65 per treatment. Since waxing needs to be repeated every six weeks or so, it can cost over $500 per year. $500 per year seems like a lot of money to spend on temporary hair removal. Electrolysis is a method of permanent hair reduction using an electro-chemical pulse sent though a needle which inserted into one hair follicle at a time. Electrolysis for back hair removal can take an average of one hundred hours and as much as 250 hours. At $40 to $150 per hour, back hair removal by electrolysis can certainly cost a lot of money. It can also be difficult for many people to take 100 hours in one hour increments out of their busy schedules to have hair removed from their backs. Back hair removal can make you feel more confident. There are many options for removing unwanted back hair including laser hair removal , electrolysis, depilatory creams, waxing, and shaving. The option you choose should fit your needs in terms of money, time, permanence, and comfort. Make sure to research each option thoroughly including pros, cons and cost comparasion before making your decision. If you want a truly professional look, take it in and show it to your stylist. She (or he) should be able to do this 'do for you the day of prom. Here are some quick tips on how to do it yourself. What you'll need: You need a blowdryer, styling mousse or lotion, a brush, wide-toothed comb, pins, a fat curling iron, hot rollers, hairpins, holding spray & hairspray. First step: Wash hair & put styling lotion in hair working from the roots out. Blow dry your hair thoroughly. This style works best on VERY dry hair. After hair is dry: Now you'll want to roll hair in hot rollers. Spritz holding spray on pieces of hair before rolling in big curlers. Once curls are cool: Take out rollers one at a time, teasing each piece a bit at the root. Be careful to keep chunky pieces together. Pull hair back in a loose ponytail Next, how to create the look in the picture: Take chunky piece of hair and roll it up, pinning it in place on your crown. Do this with each chunky piece, but be sure & curl & pin hair in alternating directions. Sometimes you'll want to roll in, sometimes out. The trick is to alternate while keeping the chunks in place. If you have bangs: You'll want to leave bangs out of the style. Part them on the side & smooth along face. Last but not least: Add extra pins for support then spray the whole look in place.
