David Bramwell is the author of the Cheeky Guide to Brighton . Wind your way down Baker Street in Brighton, and, believe me, nostalgic, syrupy saxophone melodies will be furthest from your mind. This noisy little thoroughfare, off the London Road , is home to a shoddy selection of shops and a cheesy tattoo parlour, and would be as insignificant as it is unglamorous, were it not for being home to one of the hairdressing world's best-kept secrets. Having been frozen in time for the last forty years, 'Coopers for Haircuts' no longer exists in the universe as we know it, but instead skulks in those dark shadowy corners normally reserved for nightmares, fevered visions and sketches from the League of Gentlemen. I first stumbled across Cooper's many years ago by chance and remember gazing in the window in awe at the strange and disturbing dolls' heads sporting lopsided grey toupees, and the peeling and faded black and white photos of haircuts that would frighten your granny. A hand-written sign read 'haircuts 100p', and just inside I could make out the silhouette of a man who passed more than a casual resemblance to Mr. Burns from the Simpsons. I was, naturally, intrigued. Nine years later, the price may have gone up by 20p, but otherwise nothing seems to have changed. Unable to seduce Mr. Cooper into an interview, I met instead with aficionado to the cause and compere of the Comedy Dairy, Dave Mountfield, and asked him how he first became initiated into Mr. Cooper's lair. 'It was about eleven years ago, it was a haircut there or a pudding bowl at home. The price was right, though I admit I was pulled in like people get pulled in by Devil worship: half out of fear and half out of curiosity. I guess I was seduced by his style hints from 1971 Vietnam war magazines, random press cuttings, cat wee-wee smell, and those strange, sinister dummy's heads.' On the topic of Mr. Cooper himself, Dave expounded: 'He's just like any other 203 year old desert rat war veteran barber who charges a pound, offers an endless stream of invective about anything, and who cuts bits of your hair actually out of your head. And he swears like you wouldn't believe.' Two stories I had heard about Mr. Cooper were that he had once chased someone out of his salon for asking for a 'Mick Jagger', and that he had also cut Field Marshall Montgomery's hair in World War Two. I quizzed Dave about this. 'Well the bit about Montgomery is definitely true, he even has cuttings from the Evening Argus to prove it. It's ironic though, as many of his political views veer towards the away team on that one, if my memory serves me right. If you study photos of Rommel, the 'trim' looks eerily familiar. And yes, he does seem to take personal offence at hair that touches the collar, which he regards as 'long'. I also seem to remember him dribbling on a client's head once, but that could be just a malicious memory.' Having relayed a story of mine about being chased off by Mr. Cooper when filming a super8 Sci-Fi spoof outside his shop, Dave revealed his own similar experiences. 'I once tried to make a film called 'Fishboy' with my friend Colin Fernandez. The theme of this now sadly deleted film was a young man evolving back into a fish to avoid an imminent nuclear war. In one climactic scene, Colin had to go and get his hair cut as a precursor to his dramatic reversion to fish form. High level talks were entered into with Mr Cooper and, after some tough bargaining, it was agreed that we could film in the shop, on the proviso that Colin actually had a haircut, and paid for it. A stiff price, but this was a labour of love for Colin and very much part of his cinematic vision. So, with some trepidation, Colin entered into his side of the deal. We got some lovely exterior shots through the window of Colin being subjected to Mr. Cooper's craft. However, we hit trouble as soon as we entered the door with the camera. Maybe he'd forgotten the deal we'd struck some three minutes earlier but when Mr. Cooper saw the camera enter the shop, he reacted a bit like a drug dealer being confronted at home by Roger Cook. He swore, he put his hand over the camera, and in no uncertain terms told us to desist and leave his place of business. But he insisted Colin stay for his gentleman's styling session. What really hurt is that he charged Colin an extra twenty pee as his hair was touching his collar which classed him as a "Fuckin' hippy".' But on reflection he conceded: 'I think perhaps we just weren't good enough to do him and his establishment justice, and so he threw us out like the frauds we were. He's waiting for Hollywood to call, and he's probably got Scorsese or Stone at the top of a very demanding wish list of directors. You can't fault a man for having high standards.' And finally, I wondered, if his hatred of anything below the collar was to be believed, whether the fairer sex played any part in his esteemed establishment. Well it's usually the more mature gentleman that go for the chop, but he does cut ladies hair according to his sign. Now that would be interesting... Any takers ladies? Added to the site on 12-05-05 via PageMaker Comments: "Newly arrived in Brighton in 1986, I had long, straight hair which from time to time simply needed its split ends chopped off rather than any fancy styling. Cooper's faded scale of charges did include ladies cuts so, somewhat gingerly as the place looked distinctly spit-and-sawdust blokey, I popped my head around the demon barber of Baker Street's door. Do you cut womens hair? I asked. A shocked silence instantly fell amongst the elderly Brylcreemed male customers. Mr Coopers hackles visibly rose. Battle-ready outrage was unambiguously conveyed through his taut upper body and facial expression. I did not await the invective which was clearly about to be unleashed but turned tail pronto." (Ninka, 23-05-2005) "Growing up in Brighton,Cooper's was always part of the urban landscape. It was a place that schoolboys of the Sixties were apt to loiter outside as the window carried copious faded signs for Durex! Aged about 17 I worked nearby and needing a haircut I went in one lunchtime....when I returned to work someone said "What happened to your hair? Did you go to Coopers?" I was then told that everyone went there..but usually only once. Over 35 years later I was able to buy at a Brighton Festival Open House a collage of images by Cutis Tappenden which contained amongst the London Road valley vignettes....pen and ink sketches of Mr Cooper.A real brighton character." (Geoffrey Mead, 11-10-2005) "My Dad must have been one of the few people who had his hair cut by Mr Cooper more than once. He always had his hair cut there. I think the main reason for going there was the fact that it was cheap. Bit of a skinflint my Dad!! I seem to remember the shop being there quite recently. ie in the last 10 years. Does anyone know when it actually closed?" (Marilyn Coates, 15-12-2005) Make a comment about this page hair styles. A proportion of these follicles are programmed to grow relatively long, thick, pigmented hair, for example scalp, eyebrow and eyelash hair. These are called primary terminal hairs. Other follicles grow short, fine, non-pigmented or only slightly pigmented hair, primary vellus hair which covers most of the body. This is often not visible to the naked eye. Hair cycle We all lose hairs everyday throughout life - between about 40 and 120 hairs from the scalp alone. This is obviously replaced; for example the average head has 100,000 hairs. Supposing one loses 100 hairs per day, complete baldness would occur in every one of us within 1,000 days without regrowth! We maintain a status quo of hair density by what is called the hair cycle, a method by which nature replaces hair. At any one time approximately 90% of head hair is growing and advancing in length by approximately 1 centimetre per month. Each hair grows for a period lasting from about two to six years; during this time the hair attains its maximum diameter and length. When the growth phase ends, the hair follicle begins a two to six month period of rest and the hair is shed. Only about 10% of hair is in the resting phase at any one time and when it sheds it does so randomly. Eventually the hair follicle enters a new growth period and a new hair shaft appears. Normally, as the scalp goes through these cycles, the follicles and the hairs they produce remain constant in size. However, hair follicles throughout the body have the capacity to change size and produce different types of hair. During and after puberty, governed by hereditary and hormonal influences, for example follicles on some parts of the body increase in size and produce longer and thicker terminal hair instead of the fine vellus hairs previously produced. This is often called secondary sexual hair. Hair loss 95% of the hair loss seen in both men and women is caused by a progressive condition called androgenetic alopecia, or common hereditary hair loss. In men, this is known as male pattern baldness and may progress to the familiar horseshoe-shaped fringe of hair. The varying degrees of male baldness are known as Hamilton patterns. In women, it manifests itself as a diffuse thinning of the hair over the crown (vertex) of the head (Ludwig pattern). It is estimated that androgenetic alopecia affects the majority of men and women to some degree. Hair loss can begin as early as the teens, and by age 35 almost 40% of men an women show some degree of hair loss; in men this is usually obvious but in women it is typically subtle and not noticed without close examination. In androgenetic alopecia, a combination of heredity, hormones and age causes a progressive shrinking, or miniaturisation, of certain scalp follicles. This causes a shortening of the hair's growth cycle. Over time, as the active growth phase becomes shorter, the resting phase becomes longer. Eventually, there is very little growth at all. Because the hair length and thickness are determined by how long the hair is allowed to grow before entering the next resting and shredding phase, the hair loss process in both men and women is thus a gradual conversion of terminal hair follicles to vellus-like hair follicles, secondary vellus hairs. Some hairs only partly miniaturise and are called intermediate hairs. The net result is an increasing number of short, thin hairs that may be barely visible above the scalp surface. Despite the sometimes dramatic change in follicle size with androgenetic alopecia, the follicle is not altered in structure; and the number of follicles does not change, apart from in old age when some follicular loss (deletion) occurs. At the time of writing only two medicines are licensed for use in minimising the progression of androgenetic alopecia and to some degree improving it - oral Finasteride (Propecia, MSD Ltd) and topical Minoxidil (Regaine, Pharmacia and UpJohn Ltd). Neither of these are strictly 'cures' in that any improvement or 'arrest' of hair loss gained from them will be lost within a few months of stopping the treatment. about | join | contact | site map | legal | links members | public resources | specialist groups | healthcare professionals hair style of boys | hair styles. We use potions, creams, and masks on our faces to keep complexions glowing but often neglect our hair save for a quick shampoo and blow dry. Then, all of a sudden, we look in a mirror and realize these tresses need a treatment! Let's face it, blow drying, hot rollers, curling irons, coloring, the sun all take their toll on even the healthiest of heads. Hair Mask with Shea Butter is both a treat and a treatment for dry, lifeless, lusterless hair. Shea Butter is, of course, the key ingredient, working its magic to restore lackadaisical locks. It's simple - work a palm size dollop through damp hair and leave on for up to 20 minutes. Then shampoo and rinse hair well. I'd also recommend using Fekkai's Apple Cider Clearing Rinse. The results are immediate - what a difference you'll see and feel. - Gail Cooke Was this review helpful to you? Great for thick, coarse hair , September 29, 2005 Reviewer: Annie (HI) - See all my reviews I have thick and very coarse hair (as you read in the title) that I am trying to grow out, and I have tried everything before to help tame the mane. I always look for a product that not only puts back moisture into my hair, but something that can fortify it as well to prevent more damage. I've tried almost every single intensive conditioner in the stores and tried a lot in the salons as well, however this one I came across by accident. My aunty had gone to a Frederic Fekkai promo sale and bought a WHOLE bunch of stuff. It didn't really do much for her hair, so she passed them on to me to try. Some of the stuff I wasn't too impressed with, but this hair mask did wonders for my hair! After just one use, I could totally tell a difference in the feel and texture of my hair. Usually, I have to straighten or blow dry my hair when its wet to tame it, however this product I didn't have to do too much after. I let my hair air dry and just put in a anti-frizz cream after, and that was good. The mask washes out clean (no greasy residue), so this product is really good for weekly restoration. But from what it seems like, this hair mask (along with all products, I suppose) work for some people and not for others. Your best bet is to get your hands on a sample size before you shell out the money for a full tube, since it can be kind of expensive. Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) Can do better for the money... , July 19, 2005 Reviewer: Rebecca "college student" (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews After trying out Fekkai's glossing cream and conditioner-and loving both-I decided to give this mask a try. The first time I applied the mask, my hair was oily when dry. After that, I made a point of rinsing extra thorougly when using this product. My hair felt softer after using the mask, but I wasn't amazed. For best results, I like to leave the cream in my wet hair overnight and rinse in the morning. At this price point, I think there are better masks on the market- I prefer Shiseido's Hair Care Intensive Treatment Hair Mask. I would not buy this product a second time. Borst (Miami Beach) - See all my reviews I have dry, fine, easlily tangled color-treated hair and thought this sounded like the answer. I was surprised to read the other comments since, for me, this just plain didn't work. My hair was as dry and frazzled as before I used it. I have better luck with conditioners that don't have to be left on for nearly as long a time. I recently discovered a great conditioner from my hairdresser called Bonacure which works in a few minutes and leaves my hair in great condition, shiny, managable and detangled. And for a mask I tried Keratase and it was fantastic and the consistancy made it easier to use and my hair was silky smooth and stronger. I really thought this would be amazing for any type of damaged hair but it wasn't the right choice for me. Maybe I would have had more luck with Fekkai's glossers. Was this review helpful to you? The bottle says you can leave it on overnight, so i did the first time. The smell is so fantastic you won't mind having it on your hair for a long time.
