FAQ Glossary Site info Feedback Striping caused by laser hair removal The photos below are of a male in his mid-20's two weeks after hair removal treatment with a long pulse Nd:YAG laser. Note the vertical stripes caused by uneven application of the laser. It's especially noticeable on his left side. He had to cover the treated area with makeup and writes, "I have been keeping pictures and a journal. I have been staying out of the sun, went to a dermatologist, and am using a lotion for my skin." He has generously allowed me to use these photos here. He adds he hopes it "may make others feel better if they have similar outcomes from this procedure. I know I was freaking out and did not know what to expect. I feel more at ease when I contacted you, other sources, and the dermatologists." Usually these cases resolve themselves, although it can sometimes take several months. This patient did the right thing and went to see a dermatologist. It's also extremely important to avoid getting any sun on the treated area if you've had a reaction like this. It's vital to go to a qualified professional to reduce the risk of improper treatment. For details, see my section on choosing a laser practitioner . I will add more updates as they come in. Front: His left side: His right side: Was this helpful? This free site is reader-supported. Legal Info / Terms of Use Revised 30 August, 2005 . hair loss treatment andHair Loss & Treatment Center Patient Education Lecture Series Schedule air loss, or alopecia (pronounced ah-low-PEE-sha) affects millions of people: men, women of all ages and all ethnic groups. The cause of alopecia is complex and includes hormones, genetics, medications, stress, severe illness, malnourishment, infections, and autoimmune diseases. The Department of Dermatology of the College of Physicians & Surgeons at Columbia University recognizes the serious impact of alopecia on people's lives and has assembled a team of world-renowned basic scientists and highly experienced clinicians to create the Hair Research & Treatment Center. Here, patients have access to the most recent scientific developments, diagnostic techniques and treatment options. They will be evaluated by compassionate, dedicated dermatologists specializing in hair disorders. This innovative, comprehensive treatment center will bring the specialty of hair loss treatment and research into the 21st century. New Discovery ! Benefit From Genetic Breakthrough Patients of the Hair Research & Treatment Center will also benefit from the recent exciting discovery by Angela Christiano, Ph.D. and her research team in the Department of Dermatology the first human gene associated with hair loss! The new gene, called hairless, is linked to a severe form of inherited baldness and may be the trigger that turns on the entire human hair cycle. Eventually, understanding the genes that control the hair cycle may lead to more effective treatments for various forms of hair loss. The research suggests that the gene initiates a cascade of events that stimulate hair growth. Each step along this pathway may provide new clues for other forms of alopecia. We have begun a new search for genes involved in Androgenetic Alopecia and Alopecia Areata. To do this, Dr. Christiano will begin collecting pairs of brothers and pairs of sisters who began losing their hair about the same time. Needed are 200 pairs of patients (400 individuals) within each of the following groups: Pairs of brothers with Androgenetic Alopecia Pairs of sisters with Androgenetic Alopecia Pairs of brothers with Alopecia Areata Pairs of sisters with Alopecia Areata If you would be interested in participating in studies aimed at mapping additional genes for alopecia, researchers would be interested in learning more about your family. To find out how The Research & Treatment Center can help you, or for a referral to one of our physicians, please contact Catherine Donovan-Stevens at (212) 305-5317. Hair Loss Can Be Treated Treatments are available for different forms of hair loss. The Hair Research & Treatment Center offers patients a comprehensive evaluation, including: physical examination history laboratory tests (as needed) scalp biopsy (as needed) microscopic evaluation of hair (as needed) After a complete assessment, appropriate medical and surgical treatments, as well as cosmetic options are discussed with the patient. Medical treatment may include FDA approved medications or new agents that are being studied in our Clinical Research Unit. Types Of Hair Loss The types of hair loss that can be treated at the Hair Research & Treatment Center include: Androgenetic Alopecia Male or female pattern baldness is due to a combination of genetics and hormonal influences on the hair. In men, this usually consists of a focal area of hair loss on the top of the head and at the temples which gradually increases. Women tend to have a more diffuse pattern of hair loss. Alopecia Areata Believed to be caused by an autoimmune reaction. Manifests itself in three different ways: Areata, Totalis and Universalis. Alopecia Areata is focal and patients can have one or more patches which may or may not spontaneously resolve. Alopecia Totalis is total loss of hair on the scalp, and Alopecia Universalis is complete loss of all hair on the scalp and body. Treatment may be as simple as changing a current medication, treating an infection, correcting hormonal imbalances, or using medication to halt the balding process. Other approaches relate to surgical treatments to improve appearance. Surgical Procedures & Techniques Today, several surgical procedures are available to treat hair loss: Hair Transplantation Involves grafting, a process where strips of hair bearing skin are removed from the back of the head and are dissected into smaller sections and implanted in the balding portion of the scalp. Scalp Reduction Involves the surgical removal of a portion of the balding area, thereby in effect shrinking the bald spot. Scalp reduction is used to reduce the front to top balding syndrome associated with male pattern baldness. Flap Surgery Involves the transfer of a large portion of hair and scalp from the area behind the temples to the forward, balding part of the head, creating a new hairline. Additional surgical techniques are also available in some circumstances. Your dermatologic surgeon can discuss these procedures with you. Importance of Clinical Trials As a part of Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons' Department of Dermatology, the Hair Research & Treatment Center is able to offer its patients the benefits of the wide variety of clinical trials, many in conjunction with major pharmaceutical companies. A clinical trial is a research study conducted by physicians and other medical professionals to evaluate new treatments or procedures. Studies are designed to answer specific questions and to find new, innovative ways to help patients. Patients can benefit from clinical trials because the newest therapies are available to them before they are marketed to the general public. he following is a listing of the doctors affiliated with the Hair Research & Treatment Center through Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Department of Dermatology: Faculty David R. Both men and women are interested in laser hair removal. Hair can be removed from any area. The most commonly treated sites are: lips, chins, sideburns, and beard areas. Bikini lines, underarms, and back hair are popular contenders for the laser. Entire arms or legs can be essentially hair free. Those patients who have had hair transplants and may no longer wish the same hair placement due to a changing hairline can have hairs removed. Unwanted hair on fingers, toes, and eyebrows can be eliminated. Lasers work by emitting a wavelength of light specific for its target. The laser used to treat fine lines and wrinkles is commonly a carbon dioxide laser. This laser targets water in the skin cells and causes the collagen fibers to shrink. This results in healed skin which is smooth. A hair removal laser must target the pigment in the hair follicles so that the laser beam concentrates there and causes the follicles to fall out. The best candidates for laser hair removal have dark hair. Because hair grows in three phases, only the actively growing hairs can be pulsed by a laser beam. The resting stage hairs will need to mature into growing hairs with pigment in them before they can be eliminated. This means that more than one treatment will be necessary. An average number of total treatments for one site will be five to six for complete hair removal. However, each site and skin type is a bit different; therefore, treatments are individualized. The upper lip and chin usually require four sessions. Bikini lines may take five sessions. All About Youth uses a long pulse Nd:YAG laser that has a built-in parellel dynamic contact cooling device. This feature allows for skin cooling and added patient comfort. The LASERSCOPE LYRA is the 1st laser to be FDA approved Safe and Effective for ALL Skin Tones including TANNED to the Darkest of ETHNIC Skin!! It is a fast, effective, and affordable solution for the removal of unwanted hair. Patients are often concerned about the discomfort of laser treatments. All About Youth Staff themselves have had hair removal performed and agree that mild stinging occurs and is gone in seconds. This laser also does a nice job of treating larger, blue leg veins that frequently accompany spider veins. Sclerotherapy and laser light combined can enhance the appearance of legs by erasing those unsightly veins. 60% to 70% improvement can frequently be seen after just one treatment. NOW is the best time of the year to consider having these treatments. UNLIKE 90% of the lasers used in the hair removal industry today, there is no need to wait until you are not actively tanning. Patients need NOT avoid the sun for 6 weeks before All About Youth Nd:YAG laser therapy. IPL(intense pulsed light) machines and lasers with wavelengths under 1064nm are NOT recommended for DARK skin tones and tanned patients. With our 1064nm long-pulsed Nd:YAG Laser there is NO NEED TO AVOID TANNING and DARK COMPLEXIONS NEED NOT BE TURNED AWAY! With all laser or light procedures, the hair must be darker than the skin. Light or white hair must be pretreated to add pigment to the hair follicle. Prices vary depending on the size of the site to be treated and number of sessions needed. Affordable packages are available and are discounted. Click here to see our prices for laser hair removal and vein treatment. Generally patients are first consulted with and the treatment is discussed in detail. Both physicians and laser technologists under the general supervision of a physician can do laser treatments .
