Taken as a tablet (one 1mg tablet each day, containing 1mg of finasteride), it has been shown to restore lost hair and works by inhibiting the enzyme 5 alpha reductase - so by stopping the conversion you stop the hair loss. It can take up to a year for the benefits to be seen, and after two years, around 66 per cent of men can expect to see visible re-growth. Remember that Propecia is a treatment, not a cure. This means that if you stop taking the tablets, your hair will return to its pre-Propecia state. However, the IOT suggests that it may have some undesirable, though mild side-effects in a small minority (less than two percent) of men - including erectile problems, breast tenderness and enlargement, and skin rashes. Pregnant women should also avoid taking or handling the tablets, especially if they are crushed or damaged in some way, as there may be a possibility of damage to the foetus if the finasteride is ingested or absorbed through the skin.
