FAQ Glossary Site info Feedback Permanent hair removal defined Most consumers think "permanent" means lasting forever. Unfortunately, that's not always the case as it's used in advertising. For instance, a permanent wave in your hair is not really permanent, and a permanent marker is not necessarily permanent. It's difficult to assess a new hair removal method that claims to be permanent. Most people figure that after a certain amount of time, it's unlikely that a hair will ever return. That's why several people, myself included, have suggested a specific definition of "permanent." Some of these definitions seem inadequate to me. One manufacturer claims their device is permanent based on results after 9 weeks. That's ridiculous. Waxing can last that long, and it's been clinically proven temporary. Permanent hair removal For the purposes of hair removal, the hairfacts definition of "permanent" is being able to go a year after your final hair removal treatment without having to use another method of hair removal. Keep in mind that a year might not be long enough to determine true permanence, but most consumers would be happy to have one treatment a year. The only method of clinically proven permanent hair removal is electrolysis. Some lasers and flash lamps have been able to achieve permanent hair reduction, as discussed below. Long-term hair removal Another undefined term is "long-term" hair removal. Again, it depends on what your definition of "long" is. The hairfacts definition of "long-term" is being able to go 6 months after your final treatment without having to use another method of hair removal. Your definition may vary, but I don't consider 9 weeks to be long-term. I arbitrarily decided on 6 months as a working definition, because most hair growth cycles will have completed in 6 months. Semi-permanent hair removal A newer term used by some hair removal marketers is "semi-permanent hair removal." This is a marketing term used in the salon industry that some salons have started using to describe laser results. In the salon industry, it means "lasting a few weeks." Hair reduction vs. hair removal Permanent hair removal has been established as the complete destruction of a hair follicle's ability to regenerate and grow hair. Several lasers have demonstrated permanent hair reduction in clinical studies and are allowed to make this claim by FDA. The word "reduction" adds another term that is vaguely defined. FDA has accepted the definition of reduction as a stable reduction in the number of coarse dark hairs. Some lasers have demonstrated in clinical testing that they can reduce the size of hairs and lighten the color. In some patients, this reduction appears to be permanent. Click the following link for more on lasers and permanent hair reduction "Permanent" Methods If you're seeking permanent hair removal, you have several imperfect options. A number of methods have been developed that use chemicals, energy of varying types, or a combination to target the areas that regulate hair growth. Permanently destroying these areas while sparing surrounding tissue is a difficult challenge. I recommend relying on a body of published, peer-reviewed scientific evidence to ensure the effectiveness of a method. Permanent hair removal for most (only if done correctly) Electrolysis Permanent hair reduction for some (primarily consumers with dark hair) Laser Flashlamp Lasting hair inhibition for many (requires continuous use) Prescription oral medications Prescription topical preparation (Vaniqa) Restricted methods X-ray (banned in the United States) Photodynamic therapy (experimental) Doubtful methods Electric tweezers "Transdermal electrolysis" "Transcutaneous hair removal" Photoepilators Microwaves Dietary supplements Nonprescription topical preparations ("hair inhibitors") No method is 100% effective in all clients All methods have some clients who do not seem to respond to treatment. hair accessory wholesaler and

Wholesale hair accessories - cosmetics - jewelry - novelties This is my sister's story about Hair Utopia I am a small business owner. My store is located in a strip mall and I sell hair accessories and other fun kids fashion. My main focus is on ages 5 – 13 because it is the children and pre-teens that love trendy stuff. My store has been open for about six months and I am getting more business by the day. The main reason my store is successful is because of the wholesaler that provides me all my products. It is a funny story of how I came about Hair Utopia. About a year ago I was in the process of getting my store ready. I already had a location and the construction portion was completed. It was time for me to get my products. I had taken a small vacation to Las Vegas because I needed to have some fun and relax. I told myself this was strictly fun and no business was going to be involved. When I got there I spent most of my time on the strip. One evening I was going into my hotel and I saw a flyer for a trade show that was at the Las Vegas Convention Center. It was so tempting to go because I knew that lots of businesses would be there. I gave in and went. I was walking through the aisles of the convention center looking at all the different displays and exhibits. I came across a business called Creative Collections Co. I noticed right away that they were a hair accessory wholesaler and they had a large variety of products. Everything they had focused around kids fashion. I knew I had found a perfect company to get my products for my store from. I talked to them a lot and they told me to enjoy the rest of my vacation and when I returned home to shop their website, www.hairutopia.com . I did enjoy the rest of my vacation and when I returned home I did do a lot of shopping on their website. I purchased every several types of hair accessories . I also purchased stuff like keychains, fruity lip balm, bracelets and body glitter. Three months after my trip and my wonderful business discovery, my store opened. It is wonderful for a small business owner like myself to find a wholesaler like Hair Utopia. Kids fashion is a growing business. I am glad that I am getting to be apart of it. heath and beauty care wholesale accessories fashion accessories, cosmetics, jewelry and novelties

Keiser / AP file Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is seen in thisSeptember 2002 photograph, sporting the "combover" hairstyle patented by a father and son team who won an Ig Nobel prize for their invention. BOSTON - The "combover" has long been a source of bafflement, even as it has provided bald men such as former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani with valuable head coverage. But though reactions to it vary, the combover's importance in hair history is undeniable. For their contribution, the father and son who patented this baldness-beater 26 years ago were awarded an Ig Nobel prize in engineering this week. The 14th annual Ig Nobel awards, handed out by Nobel Prize winners, recognize scientific research that "makes you laugh, then makes you think," said Marc Abrahams, editor of the Annals of Improbable Research, which gives out the award. The prizes were awarded in a rowdy ceremony Thursday night at Harvard University. Among the other recipients: the inventor of karaoke and a girl who investigated the validity of the "five-second rule" - commonly applied to dropped food. Birth of a legendary hairstyle The combover patent was born when the late Frank Smith and his son Donald, both of Orlando, Fla., began discussing Frank's baldness over some wine in 1977. Frank shaved his head, but had so many knocks that "it didn't look good at all," his son said. "So we went to Plan B." A toupee was out of the question. Donald noticed his dad had plenty of hair on the sides of his head. Why not grow one side long and sweep it over the top? "It seemed a hell of a lot more practical," Donald said. The combover patent - complete with instructional diagrams - was meant to allow Frank to bill himself as the father of the hairstyle and better sell a spray he developed to hold it in place, his son said. They never got around to producing the spray, but they did receive an Ig Nobel. 'Five-second rule' The Ig Nobel in public health went to Jillian Clarke for iher nvestigation into the "five-second rule," which says that food dropped on the floor is safe to eat as long as it's picked up within five seconds. Her research showed many floors had surprisingly little bacteria. The conclusion: If the floor is clean, it's safe to eat what's dropped on it, even after five seconds. Abrahams said Clarke's research also studied how the sexes reacted to dropped food. "A lot more women than men will pick up food from the floor and eat it when they dropped it," Abrahams said. "That's unexpected." The medicine prize went to Steven Stack of Wayne State University and James Gundlach of Auburn University, for their 1992 report, "The Effect of Country Music on Suicide." The research of 49 metropolitan areas concluded "that the greater the airtime devoted to country music, the greater the white suicide rate." Abrahams said the highlight of Thursday's ceremony was when Daisuke Inoue was awarded the Ig Nobel Peace prize for inventing karaoke. The crowd roared in delirium, Abrahams said, as real-life Nobel Laureates serenaded Inoue with a karaoke rendition of Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You." "The karoake thing was just one of these moments out of a history book," Abrahams said. 2005 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
