What's more, older hair is more prone to dryness and breakage than young hair, so your daily hair care needs change with age. Maintaining a healthy hair care regime can minimise damage and hair loss. Male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) This condition is a misnomer of sorts as it affects both women and men. While men tend to lose hair on the top back part of their heads, women may lose it equally from all parts of the scalp. This type of baldness is actually caused by a reduction in the hormone oestrogen, so it's very common in post-menopausal women. If this sounds familiar, see your dermatologist about helpful options. He or she may suggest one of the following treatments: Over-the-counter minoxidil (known as Regaine), a topical solution applied to the scalp. Regaine is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and the extra strength version isn't recommended for women full-stop. Prescription finasteride (known as Proscar), which is in pill form. If either you or your partner is using finasteride, use a condom, as this drug's active ingredient can harm an unborn child. Hormone Replacement Therapy is another potential solution for helping hair loss. As an extreme resort, many people consider hair transplants, which are looking better now than ever. Overprocessing Colouring, bleaching, perming and straightening - if done improperly - can cause hair to break or fall out, and you'll have to wait for healthy hair to grow back. Frequent relaxing using straighteners can cause permanent hair loss. Make sure you are gentle on your hair and don't have processes done too often. A growing number of Americans are opting for a more permanent-and pricey-solution: laser hair removal. Courtesy Ideal Image A growing number of men are also using laser treatments to get rid of unwanted hair on their backs or other areas WEB EXCLUSIVE By By Karen Springen Newsweek July 12 - After years of tweezing facial hairs, waxing her bikini line and dealing with bumps and ingrown hairs from shaving her underarms, Vicki Winston has had enough. So last month, the 37-year-old Knoxville, Tenn., embarked on an attempt to rid the hair from those body parts for good with a laser. The $2,400 she's spending on the process is "nothing" in the big scheme of life and worth it for "convenience and just comfort," says Winston, a massage therapist and mother of a 3-year-old. Her first treatment barely hurt and took only half an hour. She plans to go to four more sessions, every 10 weeks. "In about a year, I won't have to shave again, and I won't have razor bumps, and I won't have to worry about ingrown hairs," Winston says. Razors aren't antiques-yet. But a growing number of Americans are switching to laser hair removal. It's now the top nonsurgical cosmetic procedure for the under-35 set. Among all ages, it's second only to Botox. Last year 1.4 million Americans got laser hair removal-up 53 percent from 2003, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. "There's now technology that allows people to deal with a problem much like Lasik eye surgery did," says Dean Akers, chief executive officer of Ideal Image, which plans to double the number of its laser hair-removal facilities to 50 by the end of this year. A series of sessions may range from about $900 for bikini line or underarms to about $4,400 for a man's back and shoulders. (Insurance rarely covers laser hair removal, though occasionally it will cover treatment for African-American men who suffer from chronic infections from ingrown hairs on their beard area-called pseudo folliculitis.) But Akers says clients are not put off by the price. "It's not a big number [compared to] the cost of shaving the rest of your life," he explains. For many patients, the removal is permanent, though 25 to 40 percent experience some regrowth, says New York dermatologist Roy Geronemus, president of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. But the hair that grows back is usually finer and lighter. Laser removal works by targeting patients' melanin, the dark pigment that gives hair (and skin) its color. The melanin absorbs the laser's energy, and the resulting heat kills the roots of nearby hair follicles. That's why dark-haired people make the best candidates. "We can't treat blonde hair or gray hair because it has no target color that we can isolate," says Dr. Robert Ailes, corporate medical director for Ideal Image. Doctors classify patients on the six-point Fitzpatrick scale-with type one being a fair-skinned, blue-eyed blonde and type six being an extremely dark-skinned person of African descent. And there are specific lasers designed for different skin types. "You can't use the same approach for every patient who walks in the office," says Geronemus, the New York dermatologist. AskChrisKnight.com HOME :: Health-and-Fitness / Hair-Loss Natural Hair Loss Treatments By Christopher Luck Article Word Count: 553 [ View Summary ] Comments (0) What should you use for my hair loss treatment if you want to keep it natural and avoid drugs? Luckily there are answers to this question. For as long as there have been men, there have been men seeking hair loss treatment. Today, men have more hair loss treatment options than ever before, but many include drugs that can be very dangerous or have side effects. I dont know about you, but Im not sure any amount of hair loss makes me willing to take those drugs. Instead, I have found that there are natural options for treating hair loss in men. In looking for a natural hair loss treatment, it is important that you understand how hair loss works in the first place. Much of the time, male pattern hair loss is a genetic disorder related to having too much of a chemical called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the scalp and hair follicles. DHT is actually a form of the male hormone testosterone that is found only in the hair follicles. One natural hair loss treatment that can help with this particular problem is the application of saw palmetto oil. The treatment has been found to have some positive results. Another good natural treatment for male hair loss is a good multivitamin. Make sure it contains B5, silica, folic acid, and biotin. This can help maintain hair health. However, this natural hair loss treatment does come with a bit of a warning: be careful to regulat your dosages of the vitamin. Taking more than the recommended maximum of 30 mg of zinc per day can cause a copper deficiency. Copper deficiency can actually be counter productive for you since it has been shown to cause hair loss. Copper can be toxic if too high, though, so dont just increase your copper intake, lower your zinc intake. Maybe the easiest, but least known natural hair loss treatment is simply a change in your diet. By increasing foods that are high in iron and silica you may be able to increase the durability of existing hair and also encourage new hair to grow. Foods that may fit the bill for you are peppers, sprouts, and cucumber skins. All are high in silica. Certain beans and beef are high in iron as well. Another route you may choose to take in your search for a natural hair loss treatment is Asian medicine. Many traditional Asian medicine experts attribute hair loss to the malfunction of your kidney. To reverse the problem, traditional Asian healers might prescribe a kidney tonic to you. They may also try aromatherapy and essential oils rubbed into the scalp. We live in a highly medicated society. It is understandable if you seek out a more natural hair loss treatment rather than pumping more drugs into your body. Natural hair loss treatments are pleasant or at the very least do not offer the side effects present in many hair loss drugs. In the end, what you try is up to you and what works is hard to tell. However, seeking a healthy solution to hair loss problems is certainly a great step in the right direction. I was tired of the shiny pomade look and the Form works great with good hold and its not greasy at all. It also washes out very easily. Also, it has the dht blockers which I think is pretty cool too. Waxing, plucking, and electrolysis have proven painful and must be repeated regularly. Laser hair removal is the newest treatment option. Laser Hair Removal The laser causes controlled damage to hair follicles, causing them to go into shock temporarily. While in shock, the follicles do not generate hair. About three to six reatments are recommended over three years for the best results. Hair will eventually return but may not do so for 2-4 months in most people (really lucky people will go for 6-12 months without re-growth).. When hair returns, it is usually thinner and lighter, with (typically) 75% reduction in hair growth. Arrested hair growth following six treatments has been reported but should not be expected. The Treatments Treatments are performed in your doctor's office by a nurse or a trained technician and last from 15 to 90 minutes depending on the size of area treated. Treatments are associated with mild discomfort, not unlike a small rubber band snapping against skin. The discomfort is well tolerated when small areas are treated, but if large areas are treated, discomfort may interfere with the procedure. Discomfort can be minimized by the use of ice immediately prior to the laser application. Treatments usually do not require sedatives, pain medications, or injections of local anesthetic. You may return to work immediately after treatment. Unlike waxing, you may shave immediately prior to your laser hair removal. Anticipate that your treated skin may turn pale purple, and this will persist for several days. Some areas may scab and blister temporarily. Cost Cost ranges from $100 to $1000 per session. The more areas treated, the more you pay in general. Laser Hair Removal is Not Permanent Laser hair removal has never been proven to be permanent. Advertising laws, however, allow the providers of laser hair removal to claim that it is permanent if it lasts for at least three months. More than likely, you have heard these claims before. Do not be deceived. Laser hair removal is not permanent. Avoid the Sun As with all laser therapies, you should avoid unprotected sun for three to six months afterward to prevent sunburn and dark discoloration. You may also develop light spots on your treated areas. Both problems usually normalize within a few weeks. Wearing sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher will help protect you from dark discoloration. If you like to tan, this can be a problem, as quarterly or biannual treatments will prohibit tanning year around.
