BOSLEY - HAIR LOSS CAUSES Why do some men and women keep their hair well into old age while others begin experiencing hair loss at a young age? A Genetic Problem? For most of us who are experiencing premature baldness, the cause is genetic. Hair loss, like eye color, is an inherited trait. While you were still forming in the womb, your hair follicles were being genetically coded. If genes responsible for hair loss were present, they made the hair follicles on top of your head sensitive to the hormone dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. These follicles were then predisposed to begin shrinking when you reached adulthood. Unfortunately, once this genetic ball gets rolling, it will continue throughout your lifetime. As the hairs produced by your ever-shrinking follicles become finer and finer, they will begin failing to grow to normal length. And what is first noticed as "thinning hair" or a "receding hairline" progresses to baldness when the shrinking follicles finally stop producing any hair at all. Popular Misconceptions For many years our schools have taught - quite erroneously - that hair loss is always inherited from the mother's father. It normally only works in the first few weeks after I get my hair cut, and then only when my hair is cut right. Am BEYOND stressing, though, because I just lost the veritable God Of Hair after he moved to Savannah with his boyfriend. I guess when a woman finds the right one it is like finding gold. I used to think men's barbers were all the same when I went to get my hair cut, then I decided to change my look to that Jeff Bridges/Preston Tucker style that was big through the 30's to the 50's. Long on top and short on the sides. I typically wear my hair in a 1960s style flip. It takes about a half a can of Aquanet each time I get it done. I was so excited to be hostessing the latest Shag reception in Palm Springs that I went a little overboard with the teasing comb here: Here it is not so teased with a looser curl for a casual hang with friend Charles Phoenix I had a special "wiglet" with extra curls made to match my natural flaming red locks. I bobby pin it to my own hair on top of my head. I save the wiglet for extra special occasions.... Like helping the Millionaire (of Combustible Edison fame) listen to some tunes on the headphones - yah that's all we're doing... oh those darn paparazzi... Or like having cocktails with artist Mark Ryden and his artist wife Marion Peck.
