I bought a produt called Copa and its active ingredient issodium thiosulphate. Will this chemical burn my scalp. The productclaims that with the product being 10% of this chemical, that is allnatural. The company says you place this product over a relaxer whichhas peroxide in it.------------------------------------------------The purpose of the sodium thiosulfate in the product is apparently toneutralize the residual activity of the peroxide. Sodium thiosulfate is apopular reagent for the analyses of oxidizing substances. (for example,iodine, hypochlorite, peroxide) While my knowledge of toxicology islimited, it appears to me from reference to the Hazardous Chemical DeskReference [4th ed., edited by Richard J.Lewis, Sr., John Wiley & Sons, Inc.]that it has about the toxicity of table salt. Recall that the thiosulfatesolution is not intended for consumption, do not ingest it. Also, salt isused but a few milligrams at a time yet has a substantial effect on bloodpressure and hypertension. If you notice irritation from use of thisproduct, rinse the affected area well with water and discontinue using theproduct.Tim Spry=========================================================Sodium thiosulfate is a very good reducing agent. At 10% it should notburn your scalp. My guess is that its function is to neutralize theperoxide, which is a strong oxidizing agent.Vince Calder=========================================================Sodium thiosulfate should not burn your scalp. It doesthis by breaking the hair's disulfide (S-S) bonds so that they can bere-formed later to hold the new shape in place.Why the product purports to be all natural, I do not know.
