BOSLEY - HAIR LOSS CAUSES Why do some men and women keep their hair well into old age while others begin experiencing hair loss at a young age? A Genetic Problem? For most of us who are experiencing premature baldness, the cause is genetic. Hair loss, like eye color, is an inherited trait. While you were still forming in the womb, your hair follicles were being genetically coded. If genes responsible for hair loss were present, they made the hair follicles on top of your head sensitive to the hormone dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. These follicles were then predisposed to begin shrinking when you reached adulthood. Unfortunately, once this genetic ball gets rolling, it will continue throughout your lifetime. As the hairs produced by your ever-shrinking follicles become finer and finer, they will begin failing to grow to normal length. And what is first noticed as "thinning hair" or a "receding hairline" progresses to baldness when the shrinking follicles finally stop producing any hair at all. Popular Misconceptions For many years our schools have taught - quite erroneously - that hair loss is always inherited from the mother's father. Medical science now knows that baldness genes are passed down from both sides of the family. They also can skip generations, and are utterly random in terms of which siblings they will affect; it is quite common for a woman to keep a full head of hair while her sister begins experiencing severe thinning in her twenties. How Important Is Hair Care? Contrary to common belief, hair loss is not caused by a failure to take good care of your hair. Consumers waste millions of dollars on shampoos and phony, non-FDA approved treatments. (Only two medications, Rogaine and Propecia, have ever been approved by the FDA to treat hair loss.) We have counseled too many men and women who hold themselves responsible for their hair loss. It is important to understand that with very few exceptions, our hair follicles are going to live or die by their genetic coding - and nothing else. A hair transplant procedure is an artistic redistribution system that takes donor-dominant hair follicles from the very back and sides of the head and artfully transplants them into thinning or balding areas. Basically we take hair from where you have more than you need and put it where you need it more, the ideal solution to baldness. How long do hair transplants last? For the vast majority of patients, virtually all transplanted hair lasts a lifetime. In some cases, a small percentage of transplanted hair may be lost as the patient ages. Is it going to hurt? Although patients are administered local anesthetics and other medications, the degree of pain or discomfort experienced by patients during or after the procedures varies among patients. Whenever human skin is cut, it always heals by the process called "fibrosis." This fibrosis (commonly known as scarring) is the skin's way of healing. Thanks to the skill of our experienced hair transplant physicians, the healing sites in the transplanted areas are usually so small that the fibrosis is virtually undetectable. Any scar in the donor area is covered by your existing hair. At Bosley, hair transplantation procedures are designed to produce a very natural look. Are there any complications or risks with the hair transplantation surgery? Occurrences of infection after a hair transplant procedure are rare. In the few cases where infection does occur, it is often due to the patient's failure to fully follow post-operative instructions. Even when infection occurs, it generally is easily treatable with antibiotics, which can be prescribed by the physician. How many grafts will it take to cover 1 square inch? That is very difficult to answer without seeing you. This is because the number of grafts required will ultimately be dependant upon the texture and quality of your hair, i.e. darker, coarser hair may require fewer grafts to cover the same area as compared to lighter colored, fine hair. It will also be dependent upon your degree of baldness and your density goals. Can I have the procedure done by Dr. Bosley? Yes, you may have a procedure done by Dr. Bosley. However, you should be aware that his fees are higher than those charged by the rest of the doctors at Bosley. This does not mean that other Bosley physicians' skills are any less than that of Dr. Bosley. It is the result of the fact that if Dr. Bosley did not charge more, a substantial number of persons would ask specifically for him and the demand would greatly exceed his ability to meet all of the requests. Do you use laser in the hair transplantation procedure? Bosley physicians do not feel that the laser benefits patients. It can damage healthy hair follicles, have a negative impact on scalp elasticity, and in general, slow down the healing process. The use of lasers in hair restoration has diminished greatly in the last few years. How many procedures are necessary for hair restoration?
