I am a 23 yr old male and have recently begun seriously considering laser back hair removal. Firstly I'd like to say that finding this board was a godsend, it has provided so much more information than all other sources I've read on the net, thanks Kitty and all correspondents. So my question is... I have pretty complete covering of my shoulders and upper to middle back, however it is not very thick. I think I fall into the ideal candidate group (dark course hair and fair skin) and now I'd like to go about finding a facility to perform the procedure. Does anybody know of a good firm/technician in the Northern Virginia/DC area? The Excel Dermatology Institute in Vienna, VA advertises laser hair removal, however I have not called around and do not know what other institutions perform the procedure. Being fairly young, I do not have huge resources of money and am hoping to spend less than $2000 to rid this problem. However, I will very discouraged and depressed if I do spend that amount and am still left with hair. I guess what I'm asking is that if anybody can recommend a good place to get a consultation in my area, and how much money I should expect to spend. I know every individual case is different, but just some information would be great. As I have said before, this page has been invaluable to me, as I feel way too embarassed to discuss this back hair problem with anyone. Thanks in advance!! Sorry so wordy... . dcdwntwn posted 09-13-2000 10:58 AM I'm in the same boat as you, 27, with back hair and in DC. I've called many places between Richmond, VA and Bethesda,MD and rates for Gentlase or Lightsheer range from $600-$1200 per session. I have my first consult tonight at Plastic Surgery Associates in Rockville 301-231-0650. They are claiming $1200 each or 3 for $3000 with some kind of 5 yr. guarantee. I am very skeptical of the guarantee and am going to try to grill them pretty hard on what they are guaranteeing. The cheapest (and nicest) people so far were Stuart Medical Group 1-800-926-4247 in Richmond at $600 for up to 2 hour session. I must prerequisite all this with the fact that I have not yet attended a personal consult. This is just over the phone. Other places: Fair Oaks Skin Care Center - 703-648-2488 Washington Dermatology Assoc. -301-657-3622 $800 for upper and lower back $50 touchups and $50 for spotcheck. I am going for a consult, but wasn't impressed with the woman's attitude on the phone. . Johnf posted 09-13-2000 05:35 PM It amazes me how expensive treatment is in the US. I had my back treated on Saturday - (1.1/2 hrs worth) for 180 - which is about $252. Its nice to have something cheap here - even if the petrol crisis means I cant get there at the moment. . S posted 09-13-2000 06:22 PM Could you please tell me who is allowed to do LHR in England? Only doctors? I posted another message, but nobody has answered me,so I would really appreciate any information on this.THANKS! . David posted 09-13-2000 06:22 PM What kind of laser was used for your treatments? Many areas in Europe use first generation lasers and flashlamps passed off as lasers. Treatment prices are lower because more treatments are required than with current generation devices. ------------------ David Hardee, R.E. L.E. Shelby posted 09-13-2000 06:45 PM This is for S - why don't you call the licensing bureau or a laser center and ask. I am sure that if non-physicians are allowed to do electrolysis, then they probably can do laser. Some of us in the US are prevented from using lasers because of one of our professional organizations colluding with the doctors in Florida. We have hope that the Federal Trade Commission will take care of the situation very soon. ------------------ Shelby Owens, CME Laser Associates of NW Florida, PA http://www.laseawayhair.com 850 477-3890 . arlington posted 09-13-2000 09:16 PM dcdwntown - thanks for the information! My parents live in Richmond and I am there quite often - maybe I should call them. How did your consultation in Rockville go? . Richmond guy posted 09-13-2000 10:14 PM I live in Richmond, VA, and have had two treatments for back hair at the Stuart Medical Group. I am extremely pleased with their service. Their pricing is $600-$900 initially for a back (I had light growth, so mine was $600), and the price could go down from there depending on how much touch-up is needed for the follow up treatments. I anticipate that my back/shoulders/upper arms should not cost more than $1500, although I am so pleased with the results that I am going to have other areas done. . dcdwntwn posted 09-13-2000 11:00 PM OK...the lowdown on Physician's Cosmetic Laser Center, Rockville Pike, MD 301-231-0650 First off..I like the place and the people. Everyone was great. I got lost getting there and two people stayed late to see me even though it was 8PM. If it wasn't for the cost (and I'll get there in a sec), I'd go in a heartbeat. Here's the pricing deal: I made the mistake of saying over the phone that I needed my back done and left it at that ( I was then quoted $3000). Be careful to realize that only means your back. It's come to light that I need Back and Shoulders..which are two separate procedures. Since they are running a special right now it will cost me Back @1200x3 or $3000 Paid In Full and Shoulders @500x3 or $1200 PIF for a total of $4200. The prices are high, but they have a guarantee that for 5 full years, if I need to come back for a touchup or a full session, it will be at no cost..even if it takes 7 full sessions or just yearly touchups. I was told I was a perfect candidate with very dark hair and pale, untanned skin and that even though the quote here is for 3 sessions that it would most likely take 4..but it didn't matter since anything for 5 years was free. The technicians that do the procedure have been to training by Coherent..but only a day there and a Coherent person came to the Rockville site too. There is an RN (Pat) who does some procedures but acts more in a Supervisory position. She is who I talked to and I loved her. So, in summary $4200 for 5 years of work with the Lightsheer regardless of what it takes and it's metro accessible and I really liked the office and staff. Bonus - with that they promised (in writing) to do a small patch on each cheek where my beard is growing to my eyeballs for free with the sessions ($650 value for the 3 sessions)..and Pat did a test patch for me while I was there for FREE. I'd never heard of that one before. All this is in writing so I can call and schedule any time if I wish. Thus, if cost is of no matter to you, I like the guarantee deal, trust them (Pat has worked for the MD there for 15 years and they've had these Rockville offices for over 3) and say go for it. If you think you have a lighter problem and 3 sessions will do you, you might want to go somewhere else for a total lower cost. I have the feeling I'm going to need 4 or 5..or who knows. I'd love any advice, opinions from all of you as to whether you think it's too pricey or a good package. On a tech note, the Laser was in good shape and looked brand new ( I love the color LCD screen). She showed me how they use it and we tested from 20-29 joules on a 2"square area of my back. Yes, you could smell burning hair and 29 joules did sting a bit, but not intolerable. I'm hoping they will do it higher for real. She said that since they have the guarantee, they usually do the first one at a lighter joules to make sure you react OK and can raise it in consequent visits..since you can come back as long as you need to. Thoughts anyone?..I do want to go to a couple other places and I'm starting to realize that my other lower phone quotes might really end up higher once I get there. P.S. At Stuart Medical I was quoted $600, to those who've been there, do you think that the back and shoulders would boost me to the $900 range? Stuart was my cheapest find..and if even it's $900..Rockville is sounding good. K. . johnf posted 09-14-2000 03:00 AM I had the lightsheer laser. It was used by a registered nurse. Im told that the laser machine cost 50,000 to buy. The centre is booked almost as much as it is open - had to book 2 weeks in advance to get a weekend. Initial consultations and test patches are free. Its almost worth you coming here for a holiday- with how much money you would save. . Johnson posted 09-14-2000 09:28 AM -Johnf Where is this clinic? I've paid 700 for one treatment with the gentlelase in London. Until now I was considering going to the US for treatment. . Johnf posted 09-14-2000 05:33 PM The company is called Hairaway. They have clinics in Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle, London and soon Leeds. You can ring 08705 14 33 66 for more information and or a leaflet. The costs are based on 30 for 15 minutes. Their leaflet shows approx times for various body parts - but of course these can vary. . Richmond guy posted 09-14-2000 11:22 PM dcdwntwn, At Stuart Medical, they include the shoulders and upper arms in the price of the back. Like I mentioned before, their price ranges from $600-$900 for those combined areas for the initial session. The price for each successive session could decrease depending on how much regrowth there is. Since I don't know how thick your hair is, I can't really say where in that range you would fall. However, since Richmond isn't too far for you, I would definately first go to Stuart for a free consultation. They are very thorough with their work and are attentive to making sure the customer is satisfied. The prices you mentioned from the Rockville place seem a little high. . dcdwntwn posted 09-15-2000 08:56 AM Thanks Richmond Guy, I am pale with thick dark(almost black) hair over the entire back and shoulders. I'm thinking (based on what I've read in the postings) that the 3 treatments won't be enough for me..I'll probably be a 4 or 5 treatment kind of guy. With that as my basis, the pricing will probably come out similarly. I'm tempted by the recommendation though. It will always be a trick, however, getting to Richmond, even for the consult. . dcdwntwn posted 09-26-2000 11:11 PM Well, I went with the place in Rockville and paid the exorbitant sum. I had the first full back/shoulder/upper arm treatment on Monday and it took 1.5 hours or so total. The whole thing was at 24 joules..some parts I didnt' feel a thing..other parts I thought I'd die. I thought the joules was a little low, but they said they like to do the first treatment a little lower and move up from there. I'm now covered with lots of little scabs and am just waiting. It itches a bit. My hair grows so fast, that already there is new hair coming out from under the skin that wasn't there yesterday. The killed hairs can pull out, but I'm just going to let them shed on their own. I'm afraid that by the time the killed hair sheds, I'll already be in full swing for a new set. Oh well, I'm in this for the long haul..I'll let you know how it goes. They set the next appointmen for 4 weeks. I know that might seem a bit early, but since I'm a major grower, will that be oK? . Shelby posted 09-27-2000 08:34 AM Get some Anti-itch preparation called Rhuli by Band-Aid. This has camphor in it and is cooling plus it stops the itching and lubricates the skin. I think 4 weeks is a bit too soon, but you should do what your laser tech tells you. I think you are going to be amazed in about another week and a half when all the hairs have shed and the scabs have gone away. Keep us posted. ------------------ Shelby Owens, CME Laser Associates of NW Florida, PA http://www.laseawayhair.com 850 477-3890 . dcdwntwn posted 10-05-2000 02:43 PM Well, I'm happy to say that after 10 days, shedding is happening. As a reminder - 24 joules/Lightsheer and back and shoulders. In fact it looks like I have less hair now than the day after the treatment and I can definitely pull many out without pain. I am concerned that there definitely were some missed spots - clumps of 3 or 4 hairs which are .25 inch long and definitely connected. I am afraid, that I won't have a period of smoothness, but I'm willing to wait until after the second treatment for that. Two questions: 1. During this shedding period, is it ok to shave the back - to catch the longer hairs that were missed and to just clean things up - or will that adversely affect the shedding process? 2. When I had the treatment done she did my left side then my right. The second side hurt at least 3x as much as the first and I couldn't figure out why. I then thought that clinician fatigue may be causing her to not push down as hard so the cooling effect of the diode wasn't working. Is this a valid thought? What else could have caused this drastic change in pain? The treatment did take over an hour. . Shelby posted 10-05-2000 04:19 PM It could be clinic fatigue but it also could be that you are more sensitive on one side than the other, as many people are. If you did not have any evidence that the laser did more skin damage on the side that hurt, then it probably is just sensitivity. ------------------ Shelby Owens, CME Laser Associates of NW Florida, PA http://www.laseawayhair.com 850 477-3890 . A- (100%, 3 ratings) submitted by Andersen777 ( A++ , 99%, 1853 ratings), Apr 19, 04 A pair of scissors. Just kidding. Damaged is hair is prone to breakage, so start at the possible root of what is causing the damage. Damaged hair will always have breakage, but it can be minimized. Try one or all of these things: 1. Lay off styling tools that use heat: hairdryers, curling irons, straighteners. Let hair dry naturally or try setting curls with plain curlers and the cool setting of your hairdryer. 2. Avoid styling products with alcohol. Alcohol dries hair out and causes it to subsequently break. 3. Change your brush. This is a simple, but extremely effective way to prevent breakage. Plastic/synthetic bristles tend to "tear" hair, this is especially true when the hair is wet. Comb wet hair out gently using a wide tooth comb specifically made for that purpose. Switch to a boar bristle brush such as a Mason Pearson. Expensive, but so worth it. 4. Condition hair regularly. Use a deep conditioning treatment at least once every 7-10 days. This will help add elasticity and thus makes hair less prone to breakage. 5. Try a protein treatment that strengthens hair. The Redken Extreme line is fabulous and it really does work. In particular, the Deep Fuel treatment. About $14 for 5 treatments. Dirt cheap for awesome results. I love this stuff. Hope this helps. Hair grows faster when subjected to regualr uv rays from the sun you don't want to get skin cancer but just normal exposure to the suns rays helps to stimulate the hair folicle to grow hair. Also a well balanced diet with protien as that is what your hair and nails are made from. (100%, 1 rating) submitted by manoftheforrest (100%, 3 ratings), Apr 24, 05 As mentioned in some of my other answers I used to be a hairdresser who studied at a college in hairdressing first. Despite all the gimmiks, trying to sell shampoos that thicken hair there has never been anything that has been clinically proven to thicken hair until recently. I have heard that Loreal has put out a new shampoo that thickens hair and is scientifically proven, whether that is true or not I don't know I will believe it when I see it. How most thickeners work is they coat your hair with a little of a bulking agent or a residue type product a bit like mouse or hairspray but in a shampoo and over time it builds up give your hair more stiffness and body to create the illusion of fullness. Over time these shampoos cause residue buildup and cease to work. Most hairdressers would recommend having two different shampoos and alternating them once one stops working. Most people don't seem to realise all shampoo is, is a detergent. Some of which are PH balanced (which refers to the level of acid or alkaline) most super market shampoos these days have been forced to pick up their quality a little and make ph balanced shampoos these are fine to use as well. Ultimately, the only way to remove a split end is to cut it off. However, there are ways to temporarily glue the ends together and even give the appearance of healthy ends. For a temporary split-free finish follow these steps: Shampoo hair and with a moisturizing formula. Use a good rinse out conditioner making sure to slather the ends where the splits exist. Rinse well and then do a cool to cold rinse to seal the hair's cuticles and ends, adding instant sleekness and glossiness. Towel blot and then apply your favorite leave-in conditioner to your damp tresses. Detangle your strands with a wide tooth comb. Pour a pea sized drop of shine serum into the balms of your hands. Glide your serum coated hands over the ends of your hair making sure to focus more serum on the most frayed ends of your hair. Use a large paddle or round brush and a blow dryer and blow your hair completely dry. Make sure that the split end areas are dried as straight as possible since splits look worse when they are allowed to wave, curl, frizz or spike out. When your hair is 100% dry apply a light layer of heat protectant spray or product. Then use a ceramic or teflon flat iron to flat-iron the bottom 1 1/2 to 2 inches of your tresses from side to side. (0 ratings) submitted by never bare (100%, 1 rating), Nov 8, 05 I have constantly straightenned my hair. When straighteners were over-priced, I even used a household iron! First-thing to do is cut down your use to only weekends, (there are plenty of other styles to try during the week and Pantene frizz defence keeps my humid-weather-hair horrors at bay). If your hair is as bad as it sounds, before you wash your hair (which is hopefully not every night because that will dry your hair out even worse), lather your hair in olive oil -yes the stuff you use in stir-frys; and leave it in for 15-30 mins and rinse with warm water, then condtion. After cutting down your straightener use, washing your hair only every two days, latherring your hair in oil and taking multi-vitamins and/or silicon capsules you should see great improvements. But if you lack time or are forgetful on-going salon treatments would be simpler. When you wish to remove the oil from your hair you must first take a portion of good shampoo and apply it to the hair BEFORE you add any water, this will lather to a white cream, then once emulsified you may then add the water. Another home treatment for dry hair is using a mashed advocado with lemon juice, after washing the hair use as a conditioning treatment leave for as long as you want then rince thourghly. B- (83%, 3 ratings) submitted by lady fuschia ( A , 96%, 42 ratings), Nov 1, 05 I don't believe it makes it any fuller, but it is nourishing and will make it shiny, I have heard that beer was used as conditioner by the Ancient Egyptians. Lots of shampoos have beer as an ingredient, which is probably the simplest way to use it (Linco Beer is about the best). If you do rinse with actual beer use an organic real ale (preferably a home brew) to get the maximum nutrients and minimal chemicals, and rinse with cold water afterwards. Don't whatever you do rinse with lager dregs from your local- you'll only succed in making yourself smell like an alcoholic! This answer is ( useful ¤ somewhat useful ¤ incorrect ¤ offensive/spam ) User comments cesareDH : It's interesting but really has no scientific facts to back it up. Becky Thompson : I don't believe that "lots" of shampoos have beer or beer ingredients in them, but it is true that Egyptians did use beer. kinkstar : Interesting! Beer rinses using proper brewed real beer not chemical beer. adds a coating to the hair a bit like a hairspray leaves a residue. This is why when I was first training as a hairdresser I was taught that you can use the beer as a setting lotion as it holds the hair into a style and gives it body. With continued use in the form of beer shampoo which you used... I was told to let it go flat then use it. It worked great as a rinser, much as vinegar does. It gets out hair sprays and other products that tend to stay in the hair even after several washings. After the beer rinse, I would use my shampoo again, so that if I got pulled over the cop wouldn't think that I had hit the bar and then the road. Could this be damaging my hair, and if so what can I do about it? (100%, 1 rating) submitted by Joe-Speedy ( A- , 89%, 225 ratings), Nov 5, 05 It won't damage your hair but it will make you use a lot of shampoo to keep your hair clean. Rent or purchase a water softening system to replace the Calcium with Sodium. You will use less soap and your hair will be wopnderful. Is there anything I do about this apart from washing my hair so often? (0 ratings) submitted by KarmaKitty ( A , 95%, 256 ratings), Nov 19, 05 As odd as this might sound, you might actually want to try washing it less. Your scalp might be compensating for your frequent washings by upping the amount of oils it produces to ensure that it doesn't become too dry. Also, if you are using other products such as gels, hairspray, conditioners, etc., you might try stopping them for a while and see what difference that makes. There's also some products that you can use between washings to cut the grease. There are powders and special hairsprays. Quality varies, of course, but you can usually find them at your local pharmacy (like Walgreens, CVS, etc.) in the hair aisle. Finally, if it's really a problem you might consider seeing a dermatologist to see if there's anything medical at the root (no pun intended) of your problem. (0 ratings) submitted by sunblynd ( B , 79%, 141 ratings), Nov 24, 05 Here's a few tips. Stop using blow dryers and hot irons. Stop using shampoo. Yes, I said stop using shampoo. Stop using shampoo anyway. Use Aussie leave in Conditioner daily Use a Tresseme conditioner everyother week. Don't use shampoo for the rest of your life. Use Conditionor in place of shampoo. Do it anyway. Wait three to six months. It takes that long for the natural oils to rebuild. Good luck.
