FAQ Glossary Site info Feedback Methods of hair removal Hair removal might be considered a "cosmetic" issue, but managing or removing unwanted hair can go beyond being a simple "cosmetic" problem. Many cultures have an aesthetic "ideal" amount of hair for males and females. For some of us, unwanted hair that exceeds this arbitrary standard can cause real or perceived problems with social acceptance. The information I've compiled would fill a book, so if you're researching a specific method, you can go right to that topic. For a more thorough review, I recommend reading the background information. Background Information Definitions Temporary Methods Hair removal can be achieved through depilation (removing part of the hair above the skin's surface) or epilation (removing the entire hair). For many consumers, temporary methods at regular intervals are acceptable. Right now my focus is on devices claiming permanence, but I'll be discussing temporary methods in the future. Depilation lasting several hours to several days can be achieved by: Shaving or trimming (manually or with electric shavers) Depilatories (creams or "shaving powders" which chemically dissolve hair) Friction (rough surfaces used to buff away hair) Epilation lasting several days to several weeks can be achieved by: Tweezing Waxing (a hot or cold layer is applied and then removed with porous strips) Sugaring (similar to waxing, but with a sticky paste) Threading (also called fatlah or khite, in which a twisted thread catches hairs as it's rolled across the skin) Rotary epilators (devices which rapidly grasp hairs and pull them out by the root) "Permanent" Methods If you're seeking permanent hair removal, you have several imperfect options. A number of methods have been developed that use chemicals, energy of varying types, or a combination to target the areas that regulate hair growth. Permanently destroying these areas while sparing surrounding tissue is a difficult challenge. I recommend relying on a body of published, peer-reviewed scientific evidence to ensure the effectiveness of a method. Permanent hair removal for most Electrolysis Permanent hair reduction for some Laser Flashlamp Lasting hair inhibition for many (requires continuous use) Prescription oral medications Prescription topical preparation (Vaniqa) Restricted methods X-ray (banned in the United States) Photodynamic therapy (experimental) Doubtful methods Electric tweezers "Transdermal electrolysis" "Transcutaneous hair removal" Photoepilators Microwaves Foods and Dietary supplements Nonprescription topical preparations (aka "hair inhibitors," "hair retardants," or "hair growth inhibitors") How to choose Choosing a method Choosing a practitioner: Laser/light Electrologist Hair removal information : recommended and non-recommended Was this helpful? A growing number of Americans are opting for a more permanent-and pricey-solution: laser hair removal. Courtesy Ideal Image A growing number of men are also using laser treatments to get rid of unwanted hair on their backs or other areas WEB EXCLUSIVE By By Karen Springen Newsweek July 12 - After years of tweezing facial hairs, waxing her bikini line and dealing with bumps and ingrown hairs from shaving her underarms, Vicki Winston has had enough. So last month, the 37-year-old Knoxville, Tenn., embarked on an attempt to rid the hair from those body parts for good with a laser. The $2,400 she's spending on the process is "nothing" in the big scheme of life and worth it for "convenience and just comfort," says Winston, a massage therapist and mother of a 3-year-old. Her first treatment barely hurt and took only half an hour. She plans to go to four more sessions, every 10 weeks. "In about a year, I won't have to shave again, and I won't have razor bumps, and I won't have to worry about ingrown hairs," Winston says. Razors aren't antiques-yet. But a growing number of Americans are switching to laser hair removal. It's now the top nonsurgical cosmetic procedure for the under-35 set. Among all ages, it's second only to Botox. Last year 1.4 million Americans got laser hair removal-up 53 percent from 2003, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. "There's now technology that allows people to deal with a problem much like Lasik eye surgery did," says Dean Akers, chief executive officer of Ideal Image, which plans to double the number of its laser hair-removal facilities to 50 by the end of this year. A series of sessions may range from about $900 for bikini line or underarms to about $4,400 for a man's back and shoulders. (Insurance rarely covers laser hair removal, though occasionally it will cover treatment for African-American men who suffer from chronic infections from ingrown hairs on their beard area-called pseudo folliculitis.) But Akers says clients are not put off by the price. "It's not a big number [compared to] the cost of shaving the rest of your life," he explains. For many patients, the removal is permanent, though 25 to 40 percent experience some regrowth, says New York dermatologist Roy Geronemus, president of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. But the hair that grows back is usually finer and lighter. Laser removal works by targeting patients' melanin, the dark pigment that gives hair (and skin) its color. The melanin absorbs the laser's energy, and the resulting heat kills the roots of nearby hair follicles. That's why dark-haired people make the best candidates. "We can't treat blonde hair or gray hair because it has no target color that we can isolate," says Dr. Robert Ailes, corporate medical director for Ideal Image. Doctors classify patients on the six-point Fitzpatrick scale-with type one being a fair-skinned, blue-eyed blonde and type six being an extremely dark-skinned person of African descent. And there are specific lasers designed for different skin types. "You can't use the same approach for every patient who walks in the office," says Geronemus, the New York dermatologist. Auterrific » A Good Haircut? Auterrific 5 brilliant minds ~ infinite possibilities October 28, 2005: 5:56 pm: Linda Category - Miscellaneous A Good Haircut? Well, it looks like Ohio is shaping up to look just like Kentucky in terms of finding a good haircut. Really, people…I don’t ask for something too complicated. Here’s something you don’t know about me, though. I used to be a licensed cosmetologist. That’s right. I used to cut hair for a living. Though I mainly went to school to learn skin care and makeup, I soon found out that you can make a decent salary just cutting hair. If you’re good, you can make a lot. I was good. But I digress. OK…since I’ve went to school just like these “stylists” did, I find myself with this inner dialogue during haircuts. Let me walk you through today’s haircut. Me: I want 6 inches off the length of my hair and I’m considering lower layers. You know…don’t pull my hair up to layer. Pull it out at an angle. Her: No problem. She begins to comb through my hair separating it into different, more workable areas. No problem. It’s called sectioning. The only problem was, she never clearly defined the sections. She didn’t part down the middle and comb down on each side. She just took my hair that was combed back and combed down on the side, making the part on top look like it had been parted by a June bug. My inner dialogue: WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? Is that how you’re going to section my hair? This haircut will be interesting. She finishes doing the one length cut and because I wasn’t sure whether I wanted layers at first, she let me look at the cut. Her: What do you think of it this way? I use my hands to pull my hair down in front to find that there was a bunch of hair that hadn’t been cut. Me: Well, first you need to cut this (holding the pieced of hair that still needs to be cut). Then I think it needs layers like we talked about. She had a disappointed look on her face because she would have to work harder and this was more than a one length cut. She continues. She doesn’t section my hair at all. She just takes a chunk in back and starts haphazardly cutting layers in no particular order. First in the back, then to the side, then to the back again. It looked like she was trying to mimick the work of a Flowbee . People with no haircutting experience at all might have more organization. My inner dialogue: It looks like I’ll have a lot of work to do when I get home. Here’s the kicker. I tell these people that I used to be licensed. That way, they’ll know I’m a little pickier than the average client. She finishes doing all that and I run my fingers through my hair. Her: What do you think? Enough layers? My inner dialogue: Enough layers? There’s more layers in my hair than a wedding cake…for a 1000 guests. Wouldn’t you know, they’re all different sizes too. I find straggling sections of hair not cut…AGAIN. Holy shit! Me: Well, there’s this (holding the section of hair that needs to be cut…AGAIN). I let her finish cutting that one piece and then tell her it looks fine, knowing that I’ll be cutting my hair the next time I come out of the shower. I left and drove down the road shaking my head. What in the hell are schools teaching these people? Did they actually pass their boards? The really disappointing part was the realization that this was going in the direction of the experiences I had in Lexington. I found someone good right before I left, but before that, I was finishing my own haircuts at home. Why the hell do I want to pay someone when I am always finishing the job? I know what you’re thinking, too. “Linda, just tell them while you’re there to do so.” I can’t bring myself to tell these people any of this while it’s happening. You would think that as forward as I tend to be, I would be able to do that. No. I can’t do it because I’m too forward. I would be waaaaay too condescending. There is no way that I could keep pointing out mistakes without being condescending. I don’t go to cheap places, either. This was an Aveda salon. But, I guess I’ll have to start going to the “I have so much money that I can spend $60 on a haircut” place. I kind of wanted Joe to be a full fledged doctor before I spent that kind of money on my hair. To all the hairstylists out there. If you don’t have the talent to do this right, get out of the business. Please! -- 7 Responses nita Says: after publication. -- October 28th, 2005 at 8:37 pm I knew it! I was a stylist, too! I just read through the appointment. As you well know by how friggin in demand you were, there are not many good stylists out there. I did color, too! Yeesh. I have a handful of people who continue to drive to my house for cuts and color. From Vermont. To Massachusetts. Come visit. I’ll fix it for you Rhonda Says: after publication. -- October 29th, 2005 at 12:28 am I know why you didn’t say anything mid-cut. She had the SCISSORS! Ugh. What a nightmare. Is there any way you can call the owner/manager and try to get a free cut from someone else in a month or two? I personally get my hair cut once every 8 months. Seriously. You’d be surprised how many people cannot make a simple straight cut… 3 inches off the bottom. Mark Says: after publication. -- October 29th, 2005 at 12:00 pm Welcome back to blogging, Linda. Donna Says: after publication. -- October 29th, 2005 at 3:16 pm Sheesh! What an idiot! I’ve had my fair share of bad cuts too, and I’ve often wondered some of the same things. I’m about due for another cut and some long layers again. When shall I book my appointment with you? kidDoc Says: after publication. -- October 29th, 2005 at 4:02 pm UGGHH! HOw positively irritating! I would have thought an Aveda salon would be good.. but i guess just because they carry expensive and natural hair products doesnt mean they are good! BY the way can i just tell you internet cable is awesome!! its amazing how quickly sites come up now !!! Uptown Girl Says: after publication. -- October 29th, 2005 at 8:28 pm Since I had to leave the city for No’whereville a few months back I still drive the few hours to my former city to get my hair cut and colored - - the day I was told by a “local” stylist that the color of my highlights isn’t a color they do - - I knew I had moved somewhere scary LOL Andie Says: after publication. -- October 31st, 2005 at 2:46 pm I hate this. It’s the risk you run when trying to find a stylist, thankfully hair grows back. LOL I have been going to www.charlespenzone.com/, it’s a nice salon and not over the top with pricing. They also have salons all over. Good luck with finding a new stylist!
