Always choose a hair cut style that suits your personality, be it curly hairstyle, medium length hairstyle or short hairstyle. A black hairstyle or Asian hairstyle needs special attention. Being young and living in South Florida made that decision easier, since a nicely shaped tanned head is in style. Of course, some exercise and confidence helps "the look." It's one of the best things I did. No rugs, no pills, no shampoos and no topical creams. Just me and women dig it. Hair Loss: Let's Get Started... Hair loss is one of the most common issues in today's society. It can effect your self-esteem, your moods, your social life and your outlook on life. The best start to preventing hair loss is to understand the basics of hair: what it is, how it grows, what system malfunctions can cause it to stop growing. And this guide will cover the bases for you. Hair is the fastest growing tissue of the body , made up of proteins called keratins. Every strand of hair is made up of three layers: the inner layer or medulla (only present in thick hairs); the middle layer or cortex, which determines the strength, texture, and color of hair; and the cuticle, which protects the cortex. Hair grows from roots, which are enclosed in follicles. Below this is a layer of skin called the dermal papilla, which is fed by the bloodstream carrying nourishments vital to the growth of hair. Only the roots of hair are actually alive, while the visible part of hair is dead tissue, and therefore unable to heal itself. It is vital then to take care of the scalp and body in order to perpetuate hair growth and maintenance. Expensive treatments that claim to treat the visible hair and nourish it therefore are usually no more than bogus claims made to sell products. Hormones called androgens, usually testosterone, can cause hair follicles to shrink, causing thinning of hair or eventual hair loss. Reportedly only bone marrow grows faster in our body than hair does. The average scalp contains 100,000-150,000 hair follicles and hairs, with 90% growing and 10% resting at any given time. Hair actually grows in three stages: anagen, catagen, and telogen. The anagen phase is the phase where hair is actively growing, and of course this phase is longer for follicles in the scalp than anywhere else on your body, and lasts longer for women than men. It is natural for follicles to atrophy and hair to fall out, and this is called the catagen phase. This phase is only temporary, and eventually the follicle enters the telogen phase where it is resting. These are the 10% at rest mentioned above. Normal anagen phases last approximately five years, with catagen phases lasting about three weeks, and telogen phases lasting approximately 12 weeks. As you see it is natural to lose some hair. Natural hair loss is considered to be in the range of 100 hairs per day. It is not apparent to most people that hair is actually being lost until more than 50% of a persons hair is actually lost. > Improve My Credit Score Save Money On Gasoline < > Write Killer Resumes Achieve Any Goal You Desire < > Sleep Better Tonight Home & Health Insurance Q's < > Get Rid Of My Headache I Want My Cellulite Gone < > Got Debt? How to Choose a Flattering Hairstyle - eHow.com Clear Instructions on How To Do (just about) Everything Web eHow.com Home Personal Care & Style Center Hair How to Choose a Flattering Hairstyle If you are a woman who knows what she wants, you will make the job of the hairstylist easier. Use these guidelines to help the stylist create the look that's best for you. Steps: 1. Tie your hair back, if necessary, and examine your face shape in front of a mirror. Decide if your face is oval, long, square, round or heart-shaped. 2. Show off an oval face'egg-shaped and balanced on top and bottom, and widely considered ideal. Since any type of hairstyle flatters this face, explore a variety of looks. 3. Make a long face look shorter with hair that sits above the shoulders. Long layers work well, as do bangs. Since midline parts elongate the face, use a side part instead. 4. Choose curvy hairstyles to soften your face if it's square, with a wide forehead, wide cheeks and an angular chin. Wearing layers around your jawline frames your face and can mask a strong, angled chin. Avoid sharp, straight lines. 5. Elongate a round face'full, with a small chin, wide cheeks and small cheekbones'with longer hair that extends below your chin. Layers on top add volume and height; layers around the cheeks narrow your face. Avoid bangs and chin-length styles. 6. A heart-shaped face has a wide forehead that angles down to a small chin. Try shoulder-length hair, adding layers from the chin down. Curl or flip out these layers to create a fuller bottom that balances your small chin. A chin-length bob also works well. Avoid any look that adds fullness to the top and tapers down to wisps on the bottom. Tips: In addition to face shape, consider your hair texture when deciding on a hairstyle. A long hairstyle can render fine hair flat and difficult to manage. A shorter cut adds more body. Wavy hair looks nice in chunky layers, and thick hair is suited to soft, textured layers. Experiment with lots of hairstyles without the risk of embarrassment by trying a virtual hairstyle kit. Tips from eHow Users: 2 in1 shampoo by Anna I recommend that you do not use a 2 in 1 shampoo. It may be faster, but your hair does not get properly cleaned! Rate this tip: Fly aways and frizz by Kelsey My frizz used to be a hassle to control, but I found out that if you use a little bit of Lubriderm Daily UV Lotion with sunscreen, it's not a problem anymore! But be careful not to apply too much near your roots, or you'll end up with an oily look on top of your head. treat hair loss caused

Should I treat inherited hair loss with medication? - Quest Diagnostics Patient Health Library Should I treat inherited hair loss with medication? Introduction This information will help you understand your choices, whether you share in the decision-making process or rely on your doctor's recommendation. This Decision Point is for people with inherited hair loss ( androgenetic alopecia ) only. If your hair loss has another cause, talk with your hair professional about your treatment choices. Key points in making your decision Everyone has some hair loss every day. However, for some, hair loss becomes excessive, and treatment with medications may slow hair loss and help to regrow hair. Consider the following when making your decision: You may not get as much hair growth as youexpect. You must take the medications over the long term or anyregrown hair will fall out. Your insurance probably will not coverthe medication, and the medications can be expensive. You may haveside effects not yet known from taking these medications long-term. It may bevery dangerous to take these medications if you are pregnant or if you havecertain health conditions, such as heart problems. You may feelthat the possibility of regrowing hair and feeling better about your appearanceis more important than the limitations of hair loss treatment. Medical Information What medications are available to treat inherited hair loss? Medication for treating inherited hair loss slows thinning of the hair and increases coverage of the scalp by growing new hair and enlarging existing hairs. Currently, medications used to treat hair loss caused by heredity include: Minoxidil . Minoxidil (Rogaine) isavailable without a prescription and is sprayed on and/or rubbed into the scalptwice a day. Finasteride . Finasteride (Propecia),which is available by prescription, is a pill taken once daily. Finasteride hasnot been proven effective in women and is not approved for women by the U.S.Food and Drug Administration (FDA). 1 Finasterideshould never be taken or handled by women who are or may become pregnant, because it can cause birth defects. With these medications, hair coverage tends to improve on the top of the head but not on the forehead area. How effective are these medications in treating inherited hair loss? The effectiveness of finasteride or minoxidil depends on your age and the location of the hair loss. These medications do not work for everyone, and you should not expect to regrow a full head of hair. These medications slow thinning of the hair and increase coverage of the scalp by growing new hair and enlarging existing hairs. However, they need to be taken every day. If you stop taking them, any hair that has grown in will gradually be lost, and within 6 to 12 months your scalp will most likely appear the same as before treatment. Both medications must be taken daily. It may take 6 months of treatment before you see results. Minoxidil Minoxidil slows hair loss and grows new hair. In men, the 5% solution appears to be more effective than the 2% solution, but it costs more and may have more side effects. 2 Minoxidil seems to work best on people younger than 30 years of age who have been losing hair for fewer than 5 years. 3 Finasteride Finasteride is recognized as a successful therapy for inherited hair loss for men. Research reports that it slows hair loss on the scalp and helps regrow hair. 3 One study showed that finasteride may potentially improve hair loss on the forehead, which is usually less likely to respond to treatment than hair loss on the top of the head. 4 However, bald spots will not be completely covered, and visible results may take from a few months to a year. Finasteride has not been proven effective in women and is not approved for women by the FDA. 1 What are the side effects of these medications? Side effects of minoxidil include skin irritation and an itchy scalp. In women, minoxidil may cause facial hair growth, especially on the forehead and cheeks. If you have heart problems, ask your health professional about using this medication. Finasteride should not be taken or handled by women who are or may become pregnant, because it can cause birth defects. Possible side effects in men include sexual problems, such as difficulty getting an erection. What are the disadvantages of taking these medications? The disadvantages of taking these medications for hair loss include: The medications may not work. You should notexpect to regrow a full head of hair. Visible results may take from a fewmonths to a year. You must take the medication every day. If youstop, any regrown hair will fall out, and you may actually end up with lesshair than when you started treatment. The medications are expensiveand usually are not covered by insurance. What are the risks of not taking these medications? There are no risks to your health if you decide not to take medication for hair loss. However, for some people, there may be a risk to their well-being and self-esteem if they feel that hair loss has affected their appearance. The risk of not taking medication is that your hair loss will probably continue. However, medication is not always effective, and hair loss may continue despite treatment with medication. If you need more information, see the topic Hair Loss . Your Information Your choices are: Use medication to help stop hair loss and possibly regrow new hair. Do not use medication to treat hair loss. Have hair transplantation surgery or other surgeries to regrow hair. The decision whether to take medication to treat hair loss takes into account your personal feelings and the medical facts. Reasons to treat hair loss with medication Reasons to not treat hair loss with medication You have begun to lose your hair, and you wish to prevent more hair loss. Regrowing your hair could help your self-esteem and make you feel better about your appearance. Are there other reasons you might want to treat hair loss with medication? Your hair loss doesn't really bother you. You would only be satisfied with a full head of hair. Medications may have serious side effects when taken with other medications or if you are pregnant or have health conditions, such as a heart problem. Any hair regrown with the medications would be lost if you stop taking the medications. You may even end up with less hair than when you started treatment. Medications to treat hair loss are expensive and usually are not covered by insurance. Treatment may not work. Are there other reasons you might not want to treat hair loss with medication? These personal stories may help you make your decision. Wise Health Decision Use this worksheet to help you make your decision. After completing it, you should have a better idea of how you feel about treating hair loss with medication. Discuss the worksheet with your doctor. Circle the answer that best applies to you.
