Introduction: To become a professional makeup artist in the U.S., no formal education beyond high-school is required but experience in cosmetology or in the theater is recommended. Skills can also be learned on the job from experienced makeup artists. This is different in most European countries including the UK where training is more formal and offered in specifically designed programs at colleges and universities. Make-up artists work in the beauty and fashion industries as well as in film, television and theatre. This bibliography is designed primarily for make-up students and beginning make-up artists preparing to work in the theater. When working in the theater, wig making and the application of facial hair is normally part of the makeup artist's work. Within the theater, make-up and hair art usually falls within the larger field of Costume Design which itself falls into the professional areas of Technical Theater and Theater Design. Generally, information on beauty makeup and special effects makeup is more readily available than on theatre makeup and wig-making. Most of the resources included here discuss make-up for all industries and not only the theatre, but this does not pose a real problem, because the basic techniques are the same, and the printed resources all also discuss wig-making and facial hair techniques. Audiovisual material is available, but it is hard to find reliable information on in-print titles, and most material focuses on beauty and special effects. Overall, textbooks and handbooks seem to be generally more readily available in the UK than in the U.S. and students should make a habit of browsing the websites of UK-based bookstores and other UK-based information resources. This also especially applies for books on wig-making. back to top Print Resources: Jowers, Sidney Jackson, Cavanagh, John. Theatrical costume, masks, make-up and wigs: a bibliography and iconography . London: Routledge, 2000. Accessed April 25, 2005 at http://www.themakeupgallery.info . This well-maintained photo-gallery is a great resource featuring over 5000 images of character and prosthetic make-ups from more than 600 movies and TV shows. The content is divided into the categories favorites; old-age; character; likeness; period; hairless; disfigured; disguises; mask tricks; horror; fantasy; weird; and other. These are then subdivided into sets of photographs documenting an individual actress' transformation into character and illustrating the process. The images are either gathered by the site's owner or donated to the site. The make-up artists are given credit when known. The focus of the site is on TV/Film, but the sheer wealth of material alone makes this a worthwhile site also for theatre artists. The owner - who writes in the first-person - unfortunately does not identify him or herself, but seems to be located in the UK. The Costume Gallery's Online Library Hairstyle History. Accessed April 26, 2005 at http://www.costumegallery.com/hairstyles.htm . The Costume Gallery focuses on fashion and it is mainly this Hairstyle History that is of interest for make-up artists. Some of the articles are password protected and available only for registered users and some of the links are dead, but the categories that are accessible and current - such as A Brush with History: Vintage Hairstyles: Ladies & Girls with Long Hair or Hair & Headdress 1200s-1400s, Hair & Headdress 1500s-1700s, and Hair & Headdress 1800s - are great resources for visual material on different hairstyles. The Costumer's Manifesto. Accessed April 23, 2005 at http://www.costumes.org . Hosted by a costume historian at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, this portal offers access to information on costume & makeup and designers. The make-up section includes a comprehensive list of relevant books and interesting link lists to "How-to" resources. These lists are not too well organized and include a number of dead links, but they also include some links to visual resources such as Revampvintage.com featuring step-by-step instructions for the application of 1920s make-up and 1930s make-up . Makeupbooks.com. Accessed April 23, 2005 at http://www.makeupbooks.com . This online bookstore, sponsored by Make-Up Artist Magazine, is dedicated to books and films for make-up artists. Last updated in March 2005, the site's content is divided into 20 sections most of which are still under construction. The make-up section at this time contains only a bibliography of recommended books and a link collection of manufacturers and suppliers. Due to the lack of an advanced formal study in the U.S., students should consider taking theater and costume classes in addition to their beauty school training. This directory serves as a good starting point for investigating academic possibilities. The professional education for make-up artists is more formally organized in the UK and a number of Colleges in the UK offer introductory and advanced courses and degrees in make-up art or make-up artistry.
