I'm in "cyberspace," where no one can hear you scream. Or maybe they CAN hear you scream but they don't pay attention because they're too busy looking at naked ladies. Either way, stop screaming, would you? I for one am betting this so-called "Internet" is really going to catch on. It's neato. Take, for example, these things knowns as "blogs" - you're soaking in one right now! These blogs are great because they allow people with special insight to instantly convey their astute observations and sage opinions to a knowledge-starved world. Or so I'm told. Personally, I'm mostly going to use this one to talk about the lost thespian promise of Erik Estrada. Because really, someone ought to. The man had screen charisma the way Marlon Brando had neck fat. I may also touch on this whole "who should run the country" deal we've got going on here in Canada. Last night, the opposition voted non-confidence in the government and forced an election campaign that will take place over the holiday season. This means two things: 1) the prime minister will this morning be visitng the Governor-General to ask her (very nicely, possibly while eating a crumpet) to dissolve the 38th Parliament. And 2) millions of innocent Canadian children will be confronted with the onerous task of staring into the television this Christmas season and trying to tell Stephen Harper from the Grinch. Remember, kids: one is grumpy and has a heart two sizes too small. And the other one's the Grinch. Travelling as part of what is officially called the Leader's Tour (and what is colloquially known among staffers as That Plane That Hardly Ever Seems To Land in Alberta for Some Reason), I will be filing typo-ridden, thumb-pecked dispatches on my Blackberry over the course of the campaign. Remember: views expressed on this blog do not necessarily represent the policies or beliefs of Paul Martin. Except when I write about the hypnotic musical stylings of Nana Mouskouri. We're totally in sync on that. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11:27 AM - Well, we're off and running. Running hard! Well, technically speaking, most of us walked to 24 Sussex from Rideau Hall. Me, I waddled. But I'm a team player: I waddled hard . Now we're talking about speeches: the PM apparently wants to give some. He's completely resisting my strong advice that he express his vision for the country through interpretive dance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12:31 PM - Did you see Jack Layton's opening statement? I think that with his words, the NDP leader has finally put to rest the rampant rumour that he got into politics to get results for small kitchen appliances. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3:54 PM - The reviews are in! And I suck! "Its surprising that your team is allowing this drivel to be posted, but if you care to make the Conservative's job easier, go for it." "Mr. Feschuck - you are missing the point of 'blogs'. Many political bloggers are serious folks; your attempt at humour is doing harm to your party and your candidate." "My experience on the Internet predates the web browser, and at 44 I still consider myself tuned into what works on today's internet." Just one argument in my defence: I miss the point of a lot of things. The Journey reunion tour, for instance. What was that all about? Also, aerosol cheese and ponchos. Whether used separately or together, they just baffle me. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7:41 PM - We're on the bus to Montreal after the first rally of the campaign. The PM just gave a speech at a lounge in Ottawa's Byward Market. Critically, no animals were harmed. People keep sayng this campaign is a carbon copy of the 2004 election. But that's not true. Stephen Harper has a right handsome new hairstyle. Paul Hellyer has grabbed hold of the campaign agenda, blowing the lid off the whole UFO invasion thing, the number one priority of Canadians who are socially awkward Omni subscribers. And we were all shocked to walk out tonight to discover that, unlike 2004, the PM's oversized face is not on the side of the side of our campaign bus. Turns out this was an edict from the Prime Minister himself. Big Paul (as we called the massive head, which featured the PM in a boyish haircut and a relentless, toothy smile that we all grew to pathelogically detest) was apparently cramping his style. And frightening small children. We'd pull into small towns in Quebec and we'd invariably hear the frightened screams of innocent toddlers: "Le nez! Le nez!" Now the side of the bus reads simply: "Paul Martin's Liberals." And Big Paul has gone to his eternal resting spot, which I just naturally assume is the PM's bedroom. Thursday, October 13, 2005 By Catherine Donaldson-Evans PHOTOS Click image to enlarge STORIES ARCHIVE BACKGROUND • New York Fashion Week Offers Peek at Spring • Fall Fashion Muse: The Lady in Black • Schoolhouse Frocks: Back-to-School Fashion • ‘Lollipop Head’ Starlets Start Fashion Trend NEW YORK — After several seasons of fussing with their long, layered locks, Hollywood stars and their copycats have been looking for a shortcut. Many have found it in an updated version of a classic favorite: the bob ( search ). “Bobs are definitely hot in Hollywood right now,” said Glamour magazine beauty writer Stephanie Huszar. “They’re really gorgeous, they’re really versatile and they’re easy to style.” Celebrities who have gone all bobby lately include Charlize Theron ( search ), Paris Hilton ( search ), Nicole Richie ( search ), Britney Spears ( search ), Maggie Gyllenhaal ( search ), Kirsten Dunst ( search ) and J-Lo ( search ), among others. The traditional bob is a short, sleek and sometimes severe cut with hair that’s all one length (save for the possibility of bangs), falling somewhere between the chin and the shoulders. But today’s bob has a little more pizzazz. “The new bobs are very soft and very sexy … they’re not blunt-cut anymore,” Huszar said. “Stylists are using a razor to trim the ends, which gives them a real lightness and softness and swinginess.” Read the entire article October 14, 2005 @ 5:48 am , You're input matters. -- 5 Comments » […] Short Hair Bobs, the new Hollywood Rage […] Pingback by Ending Hairstyle Struggles » Nicole Ritchie–The Classic Bob Hair Style | hair styles, hair styles, hair style advice — October 26, 2005 @ 6:56 pm […] Short Hair Bobs, the new Hollywood Rage […] Pingback by Ending Hairstyle Struggles » Wedding Hair Styles-Do’s and Don’ts | hair styles, hair styles, hair style advice — October 29, 2005 @ 3:16 pm […] Short Hair Bobs, the new Hollywood Rage By: Barb on November 1, 2005 @ 3:09 pm | Permalink […] Pingback by Ending Hairstyle Struggles » Wedding Hair Styles–Some Do’s and Don’ts | hair styles, hair styles, hair style advice — November 1, 2005 @ 3:37 pm […] Celebrity Hair Style Trends, […] Pingback by Ending Hairstyle Struggles » I am Fashion: Hairstyle Trend Fall/Winter 2005 | hairstyles, hair designs, hair style advice — November 25, 2005 @ 11:45 am […] Celebrity Hair Style Trends, […] Pingback by Ending Hairstyle Struggles » Sally Beauty Best Tressed 2005 Survey | hairstyles, hair designs, hair style advice — December 21, 2005 @ 3:29 pm RSS feed for comments on this post. The group has made a mission of turning garbage into great works of art. -- Curly coiffed become hair apparent Salons and industry types look beyond the straight-hair set By TINA SATTER     Issue date: Fri, Jul 2, 2004 The Tribune For almost a decade now, curly-haired women have had to bow to the definitive grooming zeitgeist that straight is great. The curly craze of the 1980s is a distant memory. Until recently, requesting a perm in any salon worth its salt resulted in stifled guffaws and open looks of pity from the stylist. Worse, if you’re fate was sealed by having naturally kinky locks, well, then, let the games begin. In order to achieve the perfectly flat, glossy manes that style dictated, mop tops subjected their follicles to forms of torture that almost always involved intense heat, hours of patience and a fat wad of cash. To add insult to injury, bangs came back in style. Have you ever seen a curly-top try a fringe in front? Not good. Locally, the wavy-haired face a particular challenge. Unpredictable weather is the cruelest twist of fate for women who have fought nature at every turn to have their locks pulled straight. Melissa Ginsburg, a 28-year-old with curly brown hair has lived in Portland for seven years. She often blows her hair straight herself, but says, “On days where it rains, it’s so much easier to let it go curly. I just don’t want to look like I have a bad perm from high school.” Moisture is the enemy to the faux straight. In cities with less rain, women often get a blowout or two every week and don’t wash the mane until the next hair appointment. But in the Northwest, unless you want to live in your own environmentally controlled bubble, it isn’t worth the stress to try to get it flat. Winds of change Thankfully a change blew into town with the new year. Starting on the fashion runways and swiftly moving into editorial and advertisements, the year of the curly-haired girl arrived. Ginsburg, who has gone to a number of local stylists over the years, concurs. “Now it seems like stylists love curls.” It’s hard to say what led to such a radical change in the world of hair, but the loosening of locks is often attributed to celebs such as J.Lo or Kate Hudson who defiantly wore heads full of curls when straight still reigned. And then hair product companies got in on the game. Despite the fact that most people don’t have perfectly straight hair, the majority of products cater to the straight-hair set. The curly-headed had to cobble together combinations of other products to create shellacs and varnishes that would hold the hair down. Some companies got smart, realizing there were bucks to be made in freeing the curly-topped from second-class citizen status. Web sites such as www.naturallycurly.com popped up to offer advice and style support. A stylin’ salon Leading the curl revolution in Portland is Salon Ziva on Northwest 23rd Avenue. Owner Joe Snell downplays any trend talk. “We have been cognizant of curly hair challenges for a long time,” he says. The salon got its due when it recently won a contest held by New York City-based salon-to-the-stars, Bumble and bumble, also a leading producer of products. Bumble and bumble deemed Ziva the most “curl conscious” salon in the country. Paulino Borja, a much-loved stylist at Ziva, is matter-of-fact about it all. While some stylists run screaming from piles of snarly curls, Borja calmly runs his fingers through them and notes that the whole problem has been in trying to make curls disappear. “It’s all about appreciating them and showing people with curly hair how to work with them,” he says. “It’s that simple.” And maybe it is. If curly hair is finally deemed acceptable, then we could be witness to a whole new day for hair — here and everywhere. The manufacturers of straightening irons might not like it, but they’ve had their day. And men with curly hair? That’s a whole other story.
